AMD to split or something :)

Lets hope they get competitive with Intel. I really don't want to go back to the days of spending £600 on a 486DX2! :(

well all those people who said amd would never go under.....this is basically a clear indication that they were very close to it ....only being able to sort out this deal with the Abu Dhabi government and the company splitting up in this fashion has saved it by the looks of it.

Thats what gets me about intel fanboys etc. They say AMD are pants and hope they go under, but they would be the first to complain when intel's processor prices doubled.

I want AMD to make a comeback, I miss my old AMD Athlon Xp 2400 :D

I still say Microsoft should release a PowerPC (or some other RISC CPU) version of Windows, HAL inclusive, it'd certainly make the market more interesting... But rambling aside, hopefully this means the design side of AMD's R&D can be more focused on CPU design rather than having to invest in fabrication technologies and such. This was probably a pretty smart move on their part.

Na who in the right mind would wish that on
amd certainly no one on here i imagine :(

There used to be a PowerPC version of Windows. It was abandoned back around the time of NT 3.5 because nobody was buying it. PowerPC is even less competitive now than it was then, it's basically a dead duck outside of consoles. It's x86 or nothing now, which is why all those Intel fanboys praying for AMD's demise are morons. I expect none of them are old enough to remember what it was like in the days when Intel had a monopoly.

Nobody would be stupid enough to wish they went under but let's face it, AMD has been pants and has not had an answer to the Intel dual cores. Let's hope that is soon going to change with the promising looking upcoming releases. Intel needs some competition to get the prices down. Especially the core i7 prices.

Nice move by AMD. Lets hope this translates to some real competition for Intel.

Both companies must remain in play in order for prices to stay at a sane level, it would be nice to have maybe a couple of other players in the market

Windows NT's PowerPC HAL still exists and is maintained as part of the code base by Microsoft... the Xbox 360 uses it.

+1

I hope they become a big market player again, i've always loved AMD cpus and their upcoming Deneb chips look very good

Indeed, people here seemed to be under the impression that they could lose ~$500m every quarter and keep going. Given the current cash crisis in the world markets, AMD are VERY lucky that abu dhabi are throwing their oil money at anything as it is unlikely they would have got money from other sources. Lets hope that they get some more resources in the CPU R&D department to stop a repeat of the Barcelona chip.

There was also a DEC Alpha and a MIPS R4000 variant of NT as well. All were dropped as just didn't sell enough to warrant the development.

I don't see how this is a good move.

The fabrication part was the bit losing money. Now its hived off and has to make its own money it'll have to increase prices which means increased prices for the consumer. It will make no difference to the chip development side because the only people kitted out to make the chips for them are either Intel (which will never happen) or AMD Fabrication - so they'll still be using the same fabrication. If AMD Fabrication then goes under who is AMD Design going to use to fabricate their chips?

TSMC? They could really leverage that advantage of having ATi (who has strong tie-ins with TSMC) and the AMD fab company to increase production in case they ever get into an Athlon 64 situation where they start to get limited by how much they can produce. It means AMD can pour everything it's got into chip design and not even have to worry about the logistics of maintaining its fabrication plants.

They are hoping that the new Fab company will be able to achieve higher volumes than what AMD by itself could have. By achieving higher volumes they will be able to complete hopefuly with others.

Intel has a huge volume advantage over all other fabrication companies.
