We'll be showing off TressFX integration in the Dawn Engine, used for Deus Ex Universe projects at Eidos Montréal.

Augmented Hair in Deus Ex Universe projects: TressFX 3.0 (Presented by AMD)

In this talk, engineers from Eidos and AMD detail the TressFX 3.0 solution used in Dawn Engine which will be the cornerstone to the development of the Deus Ex Universe projects at the studio. We show how Eidos graphics engineers built upon TressFX to break new grounds and deliver a realistic and scalable hair solution in the Dawn Engine for PC and consoles. With a focus on game requirements such as artistic control and animation support this talk will cover the practical considerations of a full TressFX pipeline, from authoring to rendering. In addition, for simulation, we address topics such as collisions, shape preservation, stretching, and wind. For rendering, we discuss how to blend strands with traditional hair meshes, antialiasing solutions, and translucency sorting techniques. We will also cover the latest TressFX 3.0 advancements from AMD, including skinning and fur support, an open source Maya plugin, and new rendering options for optimum scalability.

Takeaway

Attendees will learn what quality and performance improvements and trade-offs were made in the Dawn engine TressFX implementation that will be used in the studio's upcoming titles. They will also see what features a full TressFX pipeline needs to support for AAA game development. And they will learn the latest advancements found in TressFX 3.0.

TressFX 1.0/2.0 has so far featured in two titles, Tomb Raider and Lichdom.

Superb technology I like this kind of fluff to be honest. Anything to make my games look even better :-)

Sadly stuck with an nvidia card at the moment - Gsync monitor!

If only freesync had been faster to market.

The Great thing about TressFX is it can be used for all Platforms NextGen Consoles and PC.. Stunning  Tech!

But am not a fan of Deus Ex games never gotten into them.. I want Tomb Raider Rising News!

Great find Matt. Good to see you earning your keep :D

The good thing about nVidia is you can have your cake and eat it. You get ALL the GameWorks effects and TressFX, so win win for nVidia users (and all running smoothly on G-Sync ) :D

Wtf its just hair, its hardly exciting, oh look the hair looks good, shame the gameplay is utter pap, but thats ok cos altleast they have decent hair though.

Seriously, Tress FX is nice and all but its a bit sad coming to the forums spouting about it, when we would rather hear about forthcoming hardware, and besides i expect it to be about as successful as Mantle in take up, Mantle is great, no one uses it, Tress FX will probably be the same.

Sorry Matt for ranting, 10/10 for effort as always but 1/10 for bringing a subject that most of us dont really give a monkeys about.

New Tomb Raider is said to also be using it for fur and Grass, Branches and twines.

Seriously, Nvidia screwing up left, right and center and all AMD can do is bring news of a bloody Hair technology? seriously? i mean come on...

Time is perfect to drop some wicked news about forthcoming hardware, but no wait, were saving the day with yet another piece of tech that will be about as successful as a chocolate teapot :(

the mind boggles sometimes

Harsh Si and I really liked it in TR and felt it proper added to the game. Sadly it has only been used in Lichdom as well as TR and that isn't a game I have any wish to play, so it would have been great to se AMD push/pay devs to get it in more titles. Plenty of other games this would have been sweet in.

Why would AMD Leak the news early on what there cooking up when its not even ready??

That would boggle my mind if any company did something like that.. The new Hardware isn't ready yet and when it is the new will break..
How can you expect them to release such information?

They can't just weak up one day and say Nvidia messed up new GPU out tomorrow LOL

I know Shanks, i know its not just hair, and it will be great, but i still think its a fad tech that will see low implementation :(

I can see it being used more in the future mate! Its an open Tech that works on all Platforms it even runs superb on the PS4 version of Tomb raider..

Its still a very specific solver - kind of a throw back to fixed function pipelines - I prefer what nVidia is doing and producing those kind of effects on a unified physics pipeline.

I would prefer if the developers of the games got of there bums and did the job themselves.

I agree 100% but sadly that doesn't seem to happen and they need/want/require AMD to do it for them or pay them to add it in. Us PC gamers still seem to be an after thought and whilst it is like that, we don't take priority in development time (that's the way it seems to me anyway).

I like PhysX and would like to see it more but I don't think I would have seen it anywhere near as much if nVidia didn't pay the devs to add it.

How many games is TressFX in, its only about 2/3 or something isn't it ?

2 - Tomb Raider and Lichdom.

Physics implementations are beyond the scope of many smaller studios and those using off the shelf solutions - I kind of wish AMD and nVidia would work together on a unified physics system for the good of gaming and pushing PC games forward in general :S
