AMD triple cores coming soon.

Seems odd that they are also releasing single-core CPU's aswell when dual-core is so cheap these days

true, but depends on the uses of the pc , cause single would use a lot less power :D , and single cores used to fly when clocked :)

I still don't get why they aren't releasing higher clocked parts?

Every single overclocker with a Brisbane hits 3GHz with ease, I'm verging on 3.5GHz stable.

Also the market for single core must be dead by now, the cost of dual versus single must be minute with the latest fab! The performance of apps and windows with dual over single is considerable too (not just marketing bull/hype).

If your running a business with hundreds of computers, are you going to want the £40 dual core 60W cpus or the £30 single core 45W cpus for running microsoft office? Companies want to use as little power as possible these days.

just had a thought... if these triple core parts are quads that one core couldn't make the cut on... could it be possbile to open up the 4th core too allow you to have a quad core cpu for tri core prices... sort of X800GTO > X800XTPE style

Because Phenom isnt Brisbane core, and even at 2.4Ghz its TDP is 140W, could be why the 2.4Ghz chips are delayed, amd may be trying to get the power usage down.

TDP 89W on a 2.5Ghz Triple cores seems to be an improvement, pointing towards a 120W quad, That is assuming the DigiTimes report is accurate and its not the 2.3Ghz tri core thats 89W.

I was thinking about this, however, the errors are likely to be more fatal i.e. cache problems or clock problems.

But if there turns out to be a very large demand for triple cores (a bit unlikely i think) then AMD might start selling fully working quads with a core disabled to satisfy the triple core demand, then they will very likely be able to unlock the core, unless AMD trash it to prevent unlocking. A bit like how they sell cores capable of high clocks to satisfy demand for cheaper chips.

Sorry I was referring to the Athlon range.

For playing gamse 3 cores is probably the way to go. I dont think any game will fully use all 4 cores for a while, yet you could overclock 3 cores higher then 4 cores probably and therefore get a faster cpu for gaming in a way.

but they wont use 3 cores, so just use duel core :p
