Hi,

G/f wants new laptop for general office work (word, excel), music, light gaming (sims) and Internet browsing.

Which cpu is better? I know Core 2 Duo is better for desktops use but not sure about notebooks.

Would a TL60 (2.0GHz) perform quicker than a Core 2 at 1.6GHz or does the Core 2's architecture perform better, so making the speed difference negligible?

Help!!

Cheers,
Lyle

Its completely negliagable, it should be which is better for battery life, cause if word and excel max out the CPU somethings going wrong. I personally prefer the turion kit with the assorted wifi they use, not a fan of the centrino wifi. Like I said go for battery life, no one likes a few extra FPS and losing 2 hrs :D

For those usage either will get the job done. Both perform very similarly I think, but Intel has the upper hand when it comes to battery life IMO.

Out of curiousity, how does having a Turion mean that the soundcard is gonna corrupt and an O/S load slowly?

Maybe what you state as issues are down to the chipset or laptop manfacturer ... so unless there is only one candidate for these components then I don't get it!

It has happened with 3 major brands of laptop of various ages - one only 3 weeks old and then some work fine till 6 months old.

I've never found the logic in why it does this but only happens on Turion laptops and the intel machine with the same spec except chip (and motherboard) have never had this problem. I have been supporting 280 laptops and this only happens in Turion chips... I've tried all other fixes but only a format and re-install if OS works, have ran memory and HD checks and no errors found...

I personally like AMD and have always used there chips until the Turion and Sempron range but these problems have put me off this range.

Some false information coming through here.

We run a few hundred Intel and AMD laptops, problem rates are about the same and day-to-day performance is identical... if I removed the badges you'd be none the wiser.

Agreed with Edleake. MOST laptops develop problems, and if yours happens to be AMD you blame them. Basically the advice is the differences are negligible and only concern yourself with prices/batterylife/ and maybe aesthetic appeal of the thing lol.

Hmm.. at work all the newer 'lower' end laptops sport Turions and they've been trouble free for over a year now. We're talking about maybe 35 or so and i think the worse thats happened was a few dead hdds and a broken screen.. omg the turion caused that? :D

Agreed with Edleake. MOST laptops develop problems,

Hmm.. i think the number of working trouble free for life laptops outnumber those with problems tbh :D They are by a far margin more prone to than desktops yes, cramped conditions and being mobile but i would'nt say most :)

I've owned 3 laptops, one mid range AMD based one, a P4 and a Core2. The most responsive was the AMD, the fastest was the Core2 and the warmest, P4 :D
Though I had some driver issues with the centrino chipsets in windows 2000 and laters on XP SP1. Obviously its been fixed but I've had better wifi range on the broadcoms used in the AMD's. Its all trial and error these days as things change so damn fast. And if it breaks in the first few weeks, get it RMA'd!

I've got a Turion-based lappy, and tbh it is shocking!!! I would say go for the Intel

What do you have to compare it to?

I have a dual core Turion and it's fine for general usage, photoshop is pretty nippy even with 1gb ram. Of course it's a lot slower than my desktop Core 2 @ 2.8ghz but then I would expect it to be.

thanks for the replys and sorry for my slow response, too much uni. work to do.

Opted for the Turion TL-58 in the end, mainly because of being able to get better battery in the price range and for her needs hopefully won't be much noticeable difference between the 2.

Will let you know if there are any problems.

Cheers for the responses.
