I am just about to build this computer.
Phenom 940 BE.
ASUS M3A79T-DL.
2 X 2GB 1066 Crucial
Seasonic 600W PSU.
Zalman 9700 HSFR

I have never had a go at overcklocking, but intend to start.

On asking a friend who dabbles in overclocking he said not to use the AMD overclocking feature but to do it through the BIOS.

Is this sound advice or would you recommend the AMD utility for a first time overclocker

Yeah, better to use the BIOS. It might look a bit scary when you first start, but once you get used to it everything makes sense :)

AMD overdrive is an alright utility, but its still quite a way off from being an adequate replacement for the BIOS. It constantly reads the wrong voltage for my Athlon X2 6000, don't know about the Phenom's though.

Just stick with the BIOS, everything will fall into place and you'll start to enjoy yourself :D
