Looking at building a new system, cant decide between a Phenom x4 2.6ghz or a q6600 2.4 ghz. The main thing that concersn me is that DDR3 Mobos only come in Intel Flavours is DDR3 that much better? I will only be able to afford 4gig of the slowest DDR3 RAM, wereas i could afford 4gig of the fastest DDR2 (maybe stretch to 8 for a good deal).

Which CPU is generally regarded as better for gaming and overclocking?

Not sure i understand, about the ddr3 comment, the x38 boards can support ddr3, is it much better or would a P45 board be a better investment?

As for my old processor, which i was thinking of reusing is a q6600 2.4ghz, 8mb cache 1066mhz FSB. Is this a decent CPU? Or would i be better upgearing to something like this one:

New itel cpu

Am i correct in assuming i would need a Motherboard with a 1333FSB? such as this one:

Asus P5E3 Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard

I really not sure what any of this means... Would my old CPU run like that one ive linked, ie set itslef to 1333 when plugged into that mobo? Totoal noob here, doing my 1st custom build

Your thinking of swapping you q6600 for a q6600 ?

The cpu you linked above is the same cpu as your old one but you get extra support to help you overclock* and you also I think get a booklet. Most Q6600 do 3ghz without any problem. The Q6600 is still a good cpu and getting recommeded daily on these forums for new builds.

If your not thinking about crossfire @ dual 16x then I would recommend the P45 range boards, ddr3 In my personal opinion is not worth it.
By reading your post above you do not have the Q6600 any more, if thats the case I would go something like the E8XXX range of CPU'S and DDR2 ram.

Hope the helps.

* Your Q6600 would show the same if overclocked to 3ghz. (1300fsb)

Defo a Q6600. You'll have a faster stable system. These overclock wickedly. Had problem in the past with AMD, changed over about 5 years ago to Intel and now use my computer as opposed to fix it each day.

I still have the q6600 so the FSB essentially means overclocking?

Thanks for the help, most useful.

Thats correct, default is 1066 (266 x 9) quad pumped on cpu 4 x 266
overclocked at 3ghz 1333 (333 x9), quad pumped on cpu 4 x 333 gives you the FSB of 1333mhz :)

Thanks guys, my build is coming together, the reason i asked it the my brother wnts to buy my current rig with has a q6600. So if he had it i would have to buy another CPU.

Will and overclocked Q6600, to a bout 3,2ghz be comparable to the q8 and q9 that are £250 and maybe the newer Xeon Processors that are abut £300?
Essentially im on a tight budget, about £150, I assuming that a q6600 would be as good as the q8200/q9300 if it overclocked?

the E8xxx is dual core correct? Wouldnt this be lower performance than the quad? Or would somwthing like the e8400 3ghz stock OC to summin like 4ghz and so be better?

Thanks for the help, got most of the system sorted, just need to sort the cpu if i need to buy a new one, otherwise ill be using a Q6600 that i got.

Cheers!
