AMD v Intel

I cant really see hage price drop coming, maybe for the newer quads but i doubt it will be much tbh. Plus by then i will get less for mine!

I think i might go for a e8400 and P45 mobo and overclock them, from what ive been looking at a Dual should be better for games, which is mainly what i do.

I would love a 45nm quad, but they are just too expensive.

Personaly that would be a good choice, purchase an after market cooler ie the Arctic Freezer 7 and overclock to around 3.5ghz+, I'm running the E8600 @ 4.4GHZ :)

Definately an out of date view. That's from years ago, keep up with the times! Intel's Core 2 cpus are currently much faster at most benchmarks, except for the odd test where the Phenom just about beats it. AMD were generally much better for games than Intel until the Core2 arrived. Now the Phenom is left in the dust for most applications.

Intel all the way, and if you have to buy a new CPU, I'd buy a Q4550 (2.83Ghz) as that gives you a good improvement over your old processor. If it weren't for your brother buying your old computer off you, I'd stick with the Q6600.

Where quad core CPUs are concerned, your opinion does not seem to be shared by Guru 3D or Anandtech. Now of course, you're welcome to your own opinion, but when it's based on two-year old information I wouldn't bandy the "keep up with the times!" suggestion about too often.

On the dual core front, however, you're absolutely right: until AMD make their new range of X2s available at sensible prices, there is no competition for Intel.

To the OP, upgrading from your Q6600 will be pointless at this point in time, and in the end you'll just be upset you've spent £££ on very little discernable performance.
