ok i have just been looking around and thought i would bring up the old saga of intel vs amd. has anyone used the new AMD Athlon 64 FX-74 dual core dual socket system? any briefings on it. i know ocuk isnt selling it yet and neither are most major companies but a few have been imported from the states from what i can see.

anyone tried it out?

form what i can see is technicaly it has a lower cache 2 x 1mb per cpu. so 4mb per board, but does allow up to 8gb of ram minimum on the boards and also allows sli technology memory so thats 1200mhz or standard pc6400 ddr2.

of course the also have 4 x pcie-e as standard. (2 x 16 and 2 x 8)

so what do people think? a bit expensive at the mo! 350 per core and about 400 for the board so automaticaly thats 1100 quid before anything else! but they are billing it as the ultimate "megatasking" machine!

You won't be laughing once I drop a K10 in there :(

:p

Jokester

Edit: They're a lot cheaper than that, more in line with a Intel quad core system.

form what i have read they are pretty low rating when compared to the quad intel, But at higher resoloutions it performs better as it doesn't create as many bottlenecks. jokester how does yours perform?

was it worth the cash lol?

haha i guess it is a big boys toy lol. the same sort of idea that would persuade someone to create a quad cpu quap opteron setup using a tyan board :P

"the rich sadistic" type :P

Socket F is for server but it not very much to sell and AMD will release next K10 next year with Socket AM3 (as well Socket AM2+), the current one Socket AM2 will stay for few more years.

what? no takers? :D

personally, I'm hoping AMD come out with something absolutely tremendous - and I say that running C2D. Their competition has undoubtedly helped to advance the current state of the art.

Here's hoping :)

i heard amd have lost a billion $ this year while intel has gained 4 billion $ market share... ouch amd.

they best make a come back...competition is a good

8 Intel Cores Faster Than 16 AMD Cores? - [hardware]

Intel is demonstrating a dual quad-core Xeon system at the Microprocessor Forum that is supposedly faster than four quad-core Barcelona processors. The machine is equipped with Intel's Workstation Board S5000XVN, 2 quad-core Xeons 5365, clocked at 3GHz and 16GB RAM. And the results are simply impressive: Intel scored over 4,900 pixels per seconds versus a little bit over 4,000 for AMD's 4 sockets quad-core (Barcelona) system. Again, this is an AMD 16 cores system versus Intel's 8 cores V8 machine.
