Iv got 3 cards in different household machines , GTX240 , GTX 560ti , and AMD 6970 , I cant say Iv noticed this phsx , The only research I can really find that shows a difference is a youtube comparison on arkham city , batman .
All that seems to show is that some moving animation is turned off or on .
I cant find any links that make me fully understand the difference , I do get the impression that it is an engine for asthetic things like smoke, dust , shrapnel ect , Yet I have a decent"ish AMD card and although i dont have batman arkham city , I have effects like that still ? I still see bullet fire , exhaust smoke , breathing moisture , bits that flie into the air after a crash , Its not that clear what the difference is , except the nvidia name phsx ?
What am I missing on AMD cards in this respect ? , I still feel that im looking at buying a 7970 lightning or windforce above a 670 , but im still holding out for a 680 , if they ever will arrive in those custom models .
Im only using a 27inch asus , but perhaps one day I might go to 3 screens , as i favour driving games , project cars , iracing, Rfactor 2 eyefinity seems better than nvidia offerings in the screen setup . And i think the time im ready for CF or SLI ill prob look for the next generation instead as an upgrade

what it does it adds Flavour to games.
Games use cpu for that sort of effects.
So if you got Nvidia card it moves those calculations to gpu from cpu and adds more flying bits and stuff.
Thats how i understand it. I heard there is a crack to have some old gforce card for that and ati as main.. Not sure if its worth it tho :P

Cheers , So perhaps if you have a decent AMD card and a decent CPU like a 2700k 4.5ghz the effects should take care of themselves ?
Yeah iv also been seeing links regarding this option mixing a cheap Nvidia with an AMD with the Nvidia running the phsx , but i believe nvidia are trying to block that ?

Nvidia has blocked that. All PhysX is, is just extra fancy effects. Nothing else. Honestly, it's mostly pointless. Just stick with your 6970, it's your best performing card out of the three, although the 560 Ti comes quite close to it as well if you really want PhysX.

This. physx is rarely used in anything. Your case wil just have higher temps

Thanks guys , so unless someone else comes in with something valid , I should dismiss the phsx as a factor in deciding between AMD and nvidia , back to the usual arguments about temps , FPS, overclocking , power , and so on, BUT not phsx .
So mindwiping that IMO 7970 custom like windforce and lightning is still the best if only a fraction , until the custom 680"s are available at competative prices to AMD ?

Not going to happen soon :p

sorry meant 7970 but guessed you figured that .
Conclusion then 7970 either fully overclocked , or one that will have the potential too , or 680 custom or potential to overclock to custom , is the top end way to go ?
Right now the kings are 7970 lightnings and windforce , if only for a few days/weeks/.....

What i mean to say is that the 680 won't be coming down in price any time soon.

7970 is a lot better value for money
Agreed , but what seems to improve the choice is that those 7970"s have a decent potential for mulitdisplays with there better eyefinity , and are better than stock 680"s , but TBH given the choice ill be going for a 680 OC custom version , but at a reasonable price above 7970 .
So unless can hold on , yeah if i were buying today my sensible side would say 7970 windforce , and forget that horrible blue colour in my ud5 Z77 board , unless MSI come out with a board that dont have that stupid board and have a stock speed board which i can manually overclock like they done with the 6970"s the premium for a lightning is overrated for those with the now how to manually overclock , as long as the chip binning is equal !

Therefore best card now 7970 , windforce , 2nd lightning . both overclocked already , but lack of stock cheaper versions are still best performers and bang for buck ?

The best cards IMO are the 7970s with custom coolers. This allows for plenty of overclocking at a reasonable price.

Just run the PhysX mod with an AMD card and you can enable PhysX in games which support it. It's simple enough to do if you have a spare NVIDIA PhsyX enabled card kicking about.

I had it with my 4870X2 and a GTX260 216 and it worked fine.

Thats good idea , which i havent researched how to do yet , but like its been mentioned it might not be working anymore , but on that aspect iv got a gtx240 sitting in a 775 DDR2 foxconn board which does have motherboard intergrated graphics , and i wonder what real use it is doing in there except costing me 40 watts lol

So end of the day the only cards to beat AMD 7970 OC custom cooler cards like windforce and lightning with 3GB ram , will be custom Cooling 680 windforce or OC fozr III for single 1080p gaming users , even better if you have a £40 Nvidia card for Phsx , and especially if you think you might go multiscreen eyeinfinity with max screen res on all screens , would destroy all 50 inch gaming xbox"s n PS3 fanboys on their front room family screens lol

It is supported by very few games but the effects are worth it. The Batman games especially have physx effects that really add to the immersion.

I wouldn't make a purchasing decision based on it though unless you can't separate the cards any other way.
