AMD wants to improve gaming in Linux and Steam boxes

You have a choice in some games for the majority of games you dont :P
I do think both vendors should have tryed to add effects like the gameworks concept (not saying locked for either or that i agree with all of gameworks idea's) and better IQ rather then leaving all of that mostly to DX, Yes tress hair is great and thats another example of what i feel the venders themselves were quite capable of doing
Competition in the API market is good if its for everyone but i can see why mantle is restricted to newer GCN cards as to make it for more would reduce its effectiveness to most likely to worse or equal the difference you find on your cards betweeen DX and mantle and therefore pointless

3 So far and many more to come, it will be 4 in a week. 6 or more next month.

In terms of the Game Works concept of adding features, it doesn't need to be a GW concept, 3D Shadows, Dynamic Global illumination, TressFX... and Nvidia PhysX, Hair Works, HBAO+... all existed before GW.

But there is no reason why Mantle can't be an API and a features plug-in environment, it will probably evolve into that, but it will have to be something that the wider development community approves of, as Mantle currently does, no reason to wreck that.

3 games?

Ah, you're counting BFH

released games Battlefield 4 & Thief
playable beta/early access Battlefield Hardline & Star Citizen
releasing next week Plant vs Zombies & Sniper Elite 3
next to come in fall 2014 civilization : beyond earth, and dragon age inquisition
next to come in 2015 : Star Wars: Battlefront, Star Control, Mirror’s Edge 2, Mass Effect, Mars, need for speed, battlefield 5, and probably more 2K games and crytek games
thats really not bad for an API that entered beta 5 months ago, still not yet released and it's producing more games than what DX11 did at it's first year of release.
AMD said that there is 10 games release planned for the first 12 months feb2014-feb2015, and from what i see from the list 9 are definitly making it, so almost 1 game per month

It makes my laugh so hard when I see people post but mantle on has one game, Mantle only has three games. Will you say this end of next year when mantle only has 10 games?

Everything has to start from somewhere and am sure when directX first came out that also only had one game or only had 3 games, that soon turned into God knows how many.

According to Wikipedia after 1 year DirectX 11 had 15 games released for it.

If Mantle only has 10 games supporting it by the end of next year then it's not going to get very far, DX12 will (hopefully) be launched by that time; looking forward to it!

You think I mean dx11? Am talking way back to when it first started just like mantle. From scratch
Am also sure I read other day mantle has had more success rate, then dx11 did in same amount of time.

Ah, still different time back then, so hard to compare.
Also, looking at that list it seems a few games did get DX 11 support but despite the game being out within a year of DX 11, the DX 11 patch wasn't released within that year, so it's probably closer to 12.

The video will not disappoint. I will start a new thread because it's going to be one hell of a talking point. Richard Huddy could prove to be a good appointment for AMD i think. He does need to clear his throat a lot though lol. You'll see what i mean.

I've now seen the video (unless it's a different one).
without wanting to have that discussion spill into this thread, the only discussion it really seems to have (re-)trigger is the GameWorks one.
Mantle wise he didn't tell us much we didn't already know and he basically admitted that it's quite possible that Nvidia/AMD won't pick it up and then gave them a reason not to (AMD will retain control of Mantle, best reason ever that no competitor should ever use it).
He then said that they are considering maybe looking into possibly porting Mantle to Linux, but they not committing to anything just considering it. Which to me sounded less committed than the title of this this and OP suggested.

And just for TheRealDeal, my AMD cards are currently displaying my desktop and this web browser brilliantly. Awesome AMD cards! :);p

Technically it only really has two games as game 3 is just a mod/expansion for game 1 that was made a separate game for extra $$$.

But ideally I would like to see Mantle with >10 games in a years time or it's going to end up a bit of a cold turkey. PhysX had more games than that in it's first year and that was before Nvidia got involved.
