AMD - What can they do to improve?

We all know they make half decent cards, but there is always atleast one bad point about their cards, the 290s were great cards but ran hot and loud (reference cards)

Generally AMD drivers are decent but normally arrive late to the party

They dont market anywhere near as good as Nvidia does

So what would you suggest AMD done to encourage you to splash your cash on their cards more often?

For me firstly its release some info on the cards early, build the hype, get people talking about the products with actual facts rather than internet rumors, secondly dont skimp on the cooling system, no on likes noisy excessive coolers, and lastly get the damn drivers out while the games are still relative, not months later.

Anyone else wanna chime in? :)

Get on top of their drivers and don't make their crossfire users who are the ones generally spending the most money on their cards wait longer for profiles or features.

Realise that although AIO liquid cooling can work it puts a lot of people off buying a card.

Learn to market their products better so for the average PC gamer they don't come across as 2nd best which is a stigma they still hold. Nvidia do very well at marketing each tier of their cards to be the one to go for over the competition.

Stop making petty remarks towards the competition like "4GB means 4GB". For me it only shows that they're bothered about what the competition is doing instead of focusing on their own issues.

to be honest its getting quite worrying the pure amount of time its taking just to release a driver update! their sales must have dropped a fair bit since the gtx970/980/
i just hope its all worth the wait.

Yeah i'll chime in.

I agree with most of what you said,

I think there are reasons why they don't hype up new products before release, but their marketing in general needs a lot of work.

These the latest awaited Drivers are taking a long time, 3 Months. apparently its because these Drivers are a complete rebuild, that does take a long time.

I will add this, Recording and Streaming, AMD have this through the Gaming Evolved branded Raptr App, and it is good, really very good, by far the best Recording i have ever seen.... but it requires that third party app.
I'm an AMD fan and i have to be honest i'm not happy about that, it was great initially to have it but now its just bloat-ware and a bit of an annoyance to have that running all the time.
Another thing i don't like about the Raptr app is the fact that Recording will not work unless they approve the Game, i have my own unpublished games that i would like to record with it and cant because of that.

What i would really like is that Recording and Streaming is integrated into CCC, as well as an MSI AB style OSD with proper GPU and CPU readouts.

I also think the CCC interface is very very dated and ugly, i would like them to redesign it, something much more modern and sleek, something that is a visual joy to use.

Doing it from a position of strength is different to doing it as the 'underdog' though. Though to me personally it's still all very petty, position of strength or not.

Petty? Company take jab at their competition when they screw the user base over is nothing new:

I'm not saying it is anything new but to me it just seems a bit silly. AMD have effectively screwed over a lot of crossfire users for 4 months now. Having 1 or more cards not scaling or working properly loses you a lot more performance than 0.5gb of slower ram.

Just for once can we have a conversation that does not have a couple of Q"&*%$£ arguing?

Just for once in a while i would like to see some opinions from others in a thread who haven't completely lost the bloody plot!

Nvidia has done the same...remember the big deal that they made out of AMD's framepacing "issue"? Now that it happens on their cards, it is "there's nothing to see here move along" :p

The framepacing issue is a tinny problem in contrast to the 970 memory controversy, but clearly AMD deserve more sticks than Nvidia.

Get the cooling and power use improved/lowered and I could be tempted with something from the 300 series. Their cards have always been great value for money, but the cooling in particular has put me off trying them.

I think AMD users could help out AMD. The defence and attacking of users who have problems doesn't look good.

Just my dig and don't take it personal fellas.

Not like they need to do anything though is it really, as graphics cards are not their only bread and butter, so they don't need to keep churning out cards left right and centre, or drivers, their fingers are in umpteen pies.

I think AMD should probably consider cutting the compute capability aspect, as that's one of the main cause for the higher power consumption and temp I believe. It'll allow the cards to have more rooms for increasing performance while keeping the temp and power consumption low.

Who's arguing?

We're discussing points made about what they can do to improve, people are going to agree and disagree with those points. Get over it.

Agree on the cooling, stuff power usage.

Fair play to AMD - good prices and they allow you to play with voltage :D

Marketing, marketing and more marketing. They have been and are very good cards, but there is a perception that if you can get similar frame rates for slightly more money from nVidia then that's a better option - or the people who think gaming card=nVidia

True, they are actually very power efficient at compute tasks (significantly better than the 970/980!) but most games don't take advantage of this. Not sure how much this is hurting their gaming efficiency (though their disadvantage here is much less than a lot on here seem to believe - still do use more power tho & thus make more heat!)

Yep, voltage tweaking out of the box is a nice bonus for AMD users, shame with nanny state nv cards you have to go faffing about with custom bios versions to get a bit more out of the card.:)
