AMD will live stream its 6th Jan CES 2020 press conference

AMD announce an absolute monster of a CPU that trounces the competition, and we spend a page arguing over the exact level of trouncing.

tbh it doesnt really matter a single cpu from AMD just creamed a dual cpu Intel setup at 4 times the price.
unless intel have something seriously tasty hidden away their in for a tough few years ahead

AMD are doing it the right way, take a significant stance in the cpu market whip intel into the corner and build the brand in the general publics eyes.

and when they have significant cash reserves behind them and a brand name that people associated with great value and performance then turn their sites on Nvidia

worth maybe just putting it into perspective though as meteoric as AMDs rise from the ashes is at this time apple could buy them nearly 5 times over just with what they have in the bank spare.

just a gentle reminder of the fact amd are still a small company

Yes most disappointing but not totally unexpected. (CES 2019 was pretty much an dud as well). :(

It's like this electronics show is held too early into the new year for companies to make any major product announcements.
They appear to prefer E3 which is held mid-year.

All this really means is Nvidia gets at least another 6 months free rein unchallenged on the top end, so we can forget about prices coming down.
The best we can hope for is some discounts on drawing Turing stock levels down when the new RTX 3xxx range does eventually drop.
But Nvidia has no argent need to launch Ampere quickly with just themselves as competition.

So looks like my 1080ti is getting another stay of eviction.

Yeah most things I wanted to see at CES never even showed :( Sony especially, was a massive disappointment.

AMD was good for the 3990x but for the GPU department not so much either

FTFY :D:D

Loved the stomping they showed with the 3990x but to me that wasn't something new as we had a date for the new threadripper coming just didn't know if there would be a 3980x as well.

I was dissappointed though with the graphics department announcement again. They made it so clear with fantastic news that they are the king of 1440p with 5700xt giving me the idea that there would be some form of 4k gpu announced and not just a 1080p 5600xt. You have 1080p beasts, already out, sell vega 56 does 1440p let alone 1080p and the price now is really good.

Fair enough they have so many fronts to hit and possibly they cannot do all at once, but again it gives nvidia more time to still be king and gouge us with the prices or hold off any new toys coming out for a later time.

We are getting 4k 144hz and 120hz monitors and tv's nothing can drive that and 8k is a big thing this year so defo we need new gpus to come asap.

GPU tech is just far behind atm, we are getting TV's that are 8k and 4k with high refresh rates yet most of the pathetic GPU's we have on the market right now can't produce that level of quality.

Im hoping to see GPU tech take a massive leap forwards in the coming years, similar with how CPU tech has gone, courtesy of AMD

i'd really like to think we're going to see AMD consolidate a good position in the cpu market with the next gen of processors then turn their attention to the gpu market once they have the resources and the financial backing to do so if i were nvidia i would be very nervous about what amd are capable of having witness them more or less bitch slap intel

It also seems that AMD is really focused on the cpu end and the gpu end is left behind. Makes sense at least they can stomp intel while possibly they cannot do the same with nvidia, because nvidia probably has already something up their sleeve while intel has issues. Also R&D money is not as much as what intel or nvidia has i guess.

It is a massive shame though, first when 2080ti was announced I was not very happy with how much extra it brought compared to the 1080ti it replaced, its not that it brought 35% extra fps for the same price. The icing of the cake came with the price of it which was Titan levels. For gaming at 4k 60hz. That is a rippoff and we need more competition, cannot have these beastly new tv's and monitors and drive them with a super expensive 2080ti.

Just feel the monitor and gpu space are really whacky these days.

No mention of the TRX80/WRX80 chipset, so I assume that was abandoned or perhaps will get an announcement at a later date. I'm looking forward to ordering (or presumably pre-ordering) the 3990X though.

I noticed that too and was wondering yesterday if there would be an announcement of that chipset. Its only a month until the 3990x gets released so surely there should be some form of info it it needs a new chipset.

just give them time, let them deal with one battle first, the dominance in the cpu sector will let them move funds and resources back into the gpu market

Nvidia are making the same mistake intel made sitting on their laurels and not pushing the boundaries.
12 months from now amd will drop something in the gpu market that utterly matches nvidia at the top end, 18-24 months amd will drop something that utterly demolishes nvidia

its going to be the cpu battle all over again

From what I understand, it's capable of working on the TRX40 chipset. I'm hoping whichever motherboard I end up buying in advance, possibly today even, will officially support the 3990X when it's released (even if it means a BIOS update is necessary).

I also have high hopes that AMD will do exactly what you said and only time will tell possibly 2021 is when we will have some goodies out just after the consoles come out.

The issue that has been mentioned in a few other posts is that AMD even if they do release something that matches the 2080ti, that is still a card released in Sep 2018. Nvidia is not like Intel who have a problem with 10nm and are stuck at 14nm, Nvidia actually has prepped and ready new products to counter AMD and are moving to newer tech as well. It is just that they are sitting on the stuff they have because there is no competition. No matter how much I want to see AMD beat Nvidia the same way they do with Intel, I can see Nvidia coming up with a 2080ti super and that would be it let alone the 3080 whenever it comes out.

I am no fan boy and jumped tech various times in the past so intel, radeon, amd, nvidia, Other companies, i want the best i can get for the money i am willing to spend, I just want competition, more performance and fairer prices.

I think it is bad to pay £1200 just for a card for 4k 60fps gaming. I will mention again the consoles and yes they don't do proper 4k or 60fps but if they can reach the gap with the new ones why should i spend a fortune to build a pc when a new ps5 or xbox series x whatever is called does almost the same for less than half the price of a gpu for the whole system. Well i built the pc anyway so now i am stuck with waiting for a proper gpu that won't cost me my arm or my liver :D.

AMD needs to beat nvidia's performance and price as well. Release a Radeon that can destroy the 2080ti by a margin, and be cheaper. Thats one good way also to gain marketshare from Nvidia. I am actually glad that Nvidia had to cave in and support Freesync only monitors for their gpus, means that AMD is doing something good there.

Just checked and based on AMD's own website https://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-threadripper-3990x TRX40 is good to go for 3990x they got the TRX40 picture there and a quote below:

"64 cores provide an astonishing 128 threads of simultaneous multi-processing power, while 288MB of combined cache and vast I/O from the enthusiast-grade AMD TRX40 platform work together to deliver incredible performance."

AMD and Nvidia both have access to the same foundries, so the only way for AMD to better them is with a superior design.
Zen wins because of the chiplet design, so unless they can pull off the same trick with a GPU they might struggle to significantly beat Nvidia at any cost.
Don't forget that AMD only have such a big lead over Intel because they are not only stuck on an old node, but also stuck on old designs as the new ones are tied to the new node which isn't ready.
Nvidia have neither of these issues.
It would be ironic if Intel managed to build a good GPU which helped to bring prices down.
With RT being embraced by AMD and the consoles there is still going to be loads of wasted silicon in the eyes of those that don't want it.
That wasted space will reduce the gains available for a given die size/price as does an iGPU.

It would be hilarious but can be a possibility to have Intel come out with an awesome gpu properly price and be crap in the cpu end.

RT even though I like the idea behind it, I would still prefer to use that silicon for more power or other things and at the current state of things it is wasted. Especially since it is so taxing to the gpu. I am sure people would get a 1880ti (or whatever name) instead of a 2080ti anyday if it was 60% better of a 1080ti and had the same price as the 1080ti.
