AMD working on GDDR6 memory controller

It's worrying because so many people out there are die hard idiots that they don't realize they are shooting themselves in both feet by vying for a monopoly, Mark my words that in the coming years if/when AMD stops making desktop GPU's and just focuses on CPU's and consoles, The GTX xx70 cards will cost as much as todays reference 1080 Ti, I can pretty much guarantee it now.

I think when that happens consoles will become a lot better. I mean look at the Xbox One X. That's quite a console for the money. So when consoles get AMD solely behind them i think it would be quite beneficial for them. When this does happen ill be leaving the PC gaming scene behind i think. Id have a 4k monitor for the console, using Freesync ofc and then my other monitor beside it hooked up to the PC just using a nice power efficient quad core just for the usual stuff like youtube, web browsing etc. I would probably invest in the Xim4 too seems quite good.

But i agree the majority of people's attitude towards AMD is just childish and soon will end up being in a situation where they find they put their foot in it.

A lot are probably just joking. I think few want AMD's demise in the GPU market.
Also, if there's money to be made it may attract other companies if AMD pulled out. I just hope we don't end up with Apple GPU's as they'd probably be the worse of AMD and NV * 10 :p. We'd have monitors with a special connection and you have to buy the cable from Apple too for example.
There's a limit to what people will pay.
As GPU's seem to be spin off of other products I don't think we'd end up in a situation where we're drip fed small gains for big money either. NV need to keep making good progress for their other interests and those improvements make it into desktop GPU's.

So, I don't think we'll end up with just Nvidia supplying GPU's and even if we did, give it some time and new competition will probably emerge. Similar thing is happening with memory. Prices are high, new competition I believe will be arriving which will in a while push prices down.

It's a shame so many have switched to consoles. Some of the arguments for doing that no longer stand. I know some got fed up with having to buy a new card each year for half-decent performance and also fed up with having to keep tweaking settings for the best performance. Both of those no longer stand IMO. In the case of the latter, I personally like the NV "bloatware" (as some call it) that optimises games for me.
Maybe AMD/NV should do some marketing aimed at trying to get gamers back into PC gaming to increase the size of the market.

+1 - all the people laughing at AMD, understand that NVIDIA will have a complete monopoly on the GPU market once AMD withdraws from the mid-high end scene, which I expect them to do soon.

Hopefully that won't happen,
RTG's only been behind because they were lacking the research & development money needed to develop competitive products at the high end,
Mrs Lisa Su recently announced that RTG would be getting a big funding increase for research and development which is what was expected once Ryzen was out in the wild making them money,

That was the make or break moment for AMD and unless I'm seeing things wrong Ryzen's been a success.

There is no game that looks as good as Uncharted 4/The Lost Legacy and Horizon Zero Dawn/The Frozen Wilds on the PC.

That's a very subjective opinion, Which game looks the best is a question that has no consistently agreed upon answer, There's tonnes of gorgeous games on all three platforms, This generation will be remembered as the Pretty one where the visuals reached new levels.

How much of a success though? I get the impression they're not doing the numbers expected...

That is the big question, Intel did all they could to slow Ryzen sales, First they increased the clocks on Skylake and gave us Kabylake and then they rushed Coffeelake out the door so I suppose AMD would have had a limited window of opportunity, especially with gamers. I imagine the memory issue's on release slowed sales, I for one held out until after they'd fixed it. When I finally bought my Ryzen cpu Coffeelake's were also releasing but I bought Ryzen because the platform would allow me to replace just the cpu once or twice over the next couple of years. Hopefully I wasn't the only one so yeah you're right I don't actually know how well it's selling, I was just presuming it's been selling well hence the money to give RTG a big cash injection.

If they do that they’ll just push gamers from the market. I know I would stop making my PC for gaming and use it more for work related things instead. For gaming I would just get a console. Seems it could go this way? nVidia will just shoot them self’s in the foot if prices go higher and higher.

Nvidia have been moving into other markets for a while so they may eventually be in a position to not be that worried about declining gaming sales.

Can't help but think if they were selling so well then would they of had such a big Black Friday event so soon after launch? Once it's been out on the market for 18 months then sure (the retailers were drop;ping the Intel chips, not Intel themselves)

Maybe Ryzen hasn't sold as well as hoped or maybe the price drops are simply because of Coffeelake as I imagine that's had a big impact on Ryzen sales, Coffeelake's an excellent product range that sit's in a tier of it's own when it comes to gaming so maybe undercutting them was the only way they could stay relevant, I went with a six core Ryzen instead of an 8 core because it is lacking in flat out gaming performance and I intend to change the cpu as soon as we get a refresh for that same reason, My Ryzen cpu was cheap compared to the 4790k it replaced and truth be told it's no better than my 4790k @ 4.5 was for gaming but I'm now on a newer platform that's got future upgrades to come. When we get to the end of this platforms life I'll likely buy the best 8 core available and hopefully that'll last a good few years. I was on Z97 for somewhere between 3 and 4 years without any upgrade route. If this platform can offer me 5, 6 or more years of good gaming performance with just a cpu upgrade or two that's a win in my books. I'm presuming that plenty of others considered that potential and bought into Ryzen as well.

There were some good deals for Ryzen and Threadripper on a popular uk website.
