Anyone got any idea how an AMD X2 3600+ @2.00Ghz performs compared to an Intel E1200 @ 1.60Ghz? Both are budget, but the AMD is £10 cheaper (only £25). This is for an HTPC budget system, if possible might do a little OCing.
Not really going to be used for gaming. only internet, listening to music, burning DVD/CDs, watching films, word processing.

cheers.

For word processing and general media usage neither are noticeably quicker than each other. Based on that, I'd be tempted to go for the X2 3600+ and a cheap cooler. The 512kb Unified L2 Cache on the E1200 is a bit of a let down on this CPU and this is what would make it a bit slower than the X2 3600+.

Both should overclock similarly and run about as cool as each other. The Intel will come bundled with a low profile aluminium cooler. I'm not sure how loud it is.

Overall, I suppose I'd just go for whatever's cheapest. An Athlon 64 X2 3600+ with an AMD 780G motherboard might prove to be a better HTPC solution than the E1200 + G31/G33 Motherboard for example due to the superior onboard graphics and HDMI.

no. the world is not going mad. at stock settings, AMD generally performs well with the lower end intel CPUs, but when OCed, intels take the lead... Of course, past the E6550, intel takes the cake either way...

apparently there's soem super low power 4850e or something coming out soon? might be worth waiting for?
