Guys ...

I'm going to post this in the Mobo section, the CPU section and the OS Section as i'm not sure what is causing the problem.

My system will randomly freeze for a few seconds upto abour 30 seconds in either games or just in windows. It always recovers and carries on as if nothing has happened. At the time there is no disk activity ... or anything?

System has all the latest Nvidia drivers and patches.
AMD Processor Drivers
Dual Core Optimiser
MS Dual Core Hotfix Patch

The Bios is a Standard 2004 Bios as shipped from DFI - I did try a bios update, but it didn't take and i had to reset (I did this after the problems occured) On a separate note ... which is the best bios update to use .. and the best way to install it?

System Spec:

DFI LanParty UT SLI-D (Nforce 4)
AMD X2 4800+
2Gb OCuK DDR Ram
Hiper R-Type 580W PSU
2 x Hitachi SATA 76Gb Disks (Striped)
Gainward 7900GT Golden Sample
LG DVDR Drive
Thermaltake Armour Jnr Case

Cheers
Dave

can you see two processor graphs in task manager?

this has got update bios written all over it in big marker pen. 2004 bios is not good enough

Both CPU's are showing in Task Manager

Bios was my thought also - as the X2 wasn't even around in 2004 - I tried using the 'NTune' bios update and it just caused the system to die completely .. had to reset and hope it came back .. thankfully it did. I assume that 'winflash' would be the most reliable method of updating?

I'm no PC novice and have never had trouble in the past updating bios ... however that problem has un-nerved me somewhat .. i'm assuming i will always be able to re-set it back to the original factory bios ?

Cheers
Dave

well, a bad bios flash (ie power down during bios flash) will kill the bios chip. you will need to source another one.

winflash will do it yea. get the latest bios from dfi and use winflash.

I had some freeze issues when I first installed my 4600+. I had the MS hot fix, AMD optimizer and drivers installed.

It read that MS hot fix + AMD optimizer = trouble, as both are trying to do the same thing.

Anywees, I uninstalled the AMD optimizer (cause it was easy to do) and I have not had a freeze since.

after flashing the dfi, did u clear cmos, would try there latest 04/06/2006 version, or d.l tmods bios disk on the dfi forum, this disk is great, has all the bios u will need & some helpfull tools :)

After I did a rebuild of windows I never put any of the dual core stuff on , just the nvidia drivers for my mobo.

I did do a full windows update (unless that put something on)

but no hotfix or Amd drivers.

seems to run better than when I had em before.

I had the exact problem with my DFI Venus & X2 4800, I done the following to rectify it:

1 - Installed the Latest Bios & Chipset Drivers (Still same problem)

2 - Replaced my Hyper Type R Modular PSU 580watt just as yours in your sig with an OCZ GX 700watt ( That fixed the Problem)

Theres not enough juice provided by those modular psu's especially with the stuff you've got in your sig. Make sure all your power connectors are connected on the motherboard inc. the floppy connector, if there is one on that board.

1) Connect both power connectors to the mobo (the floppy & 4 pin molex).

2) Uninstall all the amd / microsoft patches fixes related to amd processors you have added/isntalled.

3) Reboot.

4) Install the AMD athlon 64 x2 dual core processor driver (win xp/server2003) from here.

5) Reboot.

If that doesnt help, try removing your dvd drive. I have had a similar problem with a duff drive before.

Richie.

personally what id do is take the bios battery out for 10 seconds to refesh it,

then id back up all my data then reinstall XP so that all the ntune or tuned up stuff is eraised, then set it back up and then if youv overclocked cpu or anything just re overclock it in the bios (i hate startup programes that overclock on startup)

thats what id try mate :)
