Am I being thick? or perhaps jus plain dense?

I can't find anywhere to buy one from?! (the 2x1mb L2 cache one....)

I'm looking for one for my MSI Neo4 Platinum....

...Thinking a perfect upgrade to the fastest (affordable) CPU the board can take, to replace my AMD Athlon Xp 3200+....

It is released in the Uk isn't it!?

If it is, any tips on where to buy from? (again, i can't see ocuk stocking it?!)

Alex...

It's been discontinued like all 939 chips. Tho there's still a small supply of the lower models knocking around.

Have a look for the Opteron 180 instead, or look for a used X2 4800+.

ahh i had no idea they had been discontinued... i dont keep tabs on this sort of stuff anymore.

Are the opterons better performance wise compared to how much you pay for them?

basically, would it be worth splashing out for an opteron? when i can have a much cheaper alternative upgrade which would still be far better that what i have currently?

Alex.

As Cob said, all 939's were discontinued around a year and a half ago.

The Manchester cores (2x512kb cache) are still knocking around, a few on OcUK. The Toledo cores (2x1mb) are as rare as hens teeth now!

Jon

Edit: The Opterons will usually clock higher than their counterparts and can run cooler. The best Opteron (in my opinion) was the 180 E4 stepping. The E6 was not so good (needed more volts for same clock speed).

The extra 512kb cache per core of the Toledos was generally seen as equivalent to a 100-200mhz increase in clock speed, and was advisable as clock speed can be increased with overclocking, whereas adding cache is impossible.

The 4200+ X2 might be a good choice if OcUK still have them in stock. With a bit of overclocking you might get 2.5-2.6Ghz out of it.

okay, well i think i'll bite the bullet and go for a 4200+ it will still be far better performance than what i have currently.

Thanks for your replies though guys!

The Opty 180 and the X2 4800+ are the exact same chip. Tho traditionally the Opterons overclock better than the desktop versions.

You can get a 180 for ~£100 now. It's the cheapest they've ever been, but it's still a lot for a discontinued product.

You're too quick for me :D

I just added some stuff to my last post ;)

haha i do try to be sharpish replying... perhaps too sharp!

so do the opterons (180) have the 1mb cache?

If they do, then it might be the best choice?

Yup. And it's noticeable. If you can find one, I definitely recommend it. Amazing chip.

If you can find the E4 stepping, all the better. They overclock better, but the E6 is still very good!

Jon

/Edit: Holy cow you lot are quick round here  :D

i have just seen this spec on a opteron ( AMD Opteron 64 180, Socket 939, Denmark Core, 2x 2.4GHz, 2MB Cache) The core is a Denmark is this a new stepping.

Denmark was what the core name was going to be when AMD was still doing S940 single way Opterons, but they're decision to stop production of them and just make S939 Opterons meant that the actual cores used in them were Toledo.

The Denmark/Toledo thing was weird. I never quite worked it out, but for all intents and purposes they are the same thing.

Jon

Edit: Just seen Jokester's reply. Obviously something got slightly mixed up somewhere, and some cores were codenamed Toledo and some Opteron cores were called Denmark. However, as I said, they're the same thing.

wow, they really are scarce aren't they? i'm looking for both the opterons and the x2's... (esp. the 2x1mb cache ones)

is there actually anywhere that stocks them?

If there isnt, am going to get a 4200+ as i need something better than my 3200+....

and fast before i lose my money to some other good cause......!

Alex

Yup, as I said, hens' teeth.

There are a few places that stock them, but even if I could find one, linking from here isn't allowed.

The 4200+ X2 is still a great chip and with a bit of clocking will match the 4400+ X2.

I believe there is also a 4600+ X2 in the member's market. It's just the 4200+ X2 with a 12x multiplier instead of 11x. Keep an eye out there, the Manchester core X2s appear there every now and again :) Seeing a Toledo there is very rare though.

Have a look on a certain auction site ;)

Jon

The dual core FX chips are essentially the same as the Opteron dual cores with the exception of being fully unlocked multiplier wise.

Jokester

Unlocked multipliers. And expensive.

Also I believe the FX-60 was the only dual core FX manufactured on the 939 socket. You could have a look around for those, but depending on price, they're usually not worth the money. But then again, see how much you can find it for :)
