AMD X2 4800+

as has been mentioned above, your 4800x2 is a good chip still.

My 3800x2 at 2.55 coupled up with a 3850 pro is giving me 8600 in 3dmark 06 and games fly on my 19in monitor. Crysis on mid settings is between 35-45fps and GRID hurtles along at 40+ on ultra settings.

The ATi 4850 card is a good third faster than that, and your chip will hit 2.8-3ghz happily with a £15 Freezer 64 cooler. so you should easily be in 10000 territory and have a competant gaming machine.

You could always sell all your bits and buy something like this

EDIT: But if buying a system you should go for more like this as it offers a better upgrade path:

But you are still cpu limited as I have said. My 3dmark06 scores went from 10586 to 16583 going from a 4200+ x2 @3Ghz to a q6600 @ 3.6Ghz with the same graphics card.

Yes an overclocked 4800+ x 2 is still a have decent gaming rig but for what it's worth, you can have better for little or now cost.

Plus if you change the mobo now, you will have future upgrade options to much faster Intel chips in the future whereas there will always be the point when the 4800+x2 and socket 939 board has to go.

As for how much, they do seem to vary recently between £70 and £150 so maybe you'll get around £100 on that well known auction site.

Put it up with a buy it now price and see what happens. Or stick it on the members market on here. Can;t find any sold recently except for just the heatsink and fan which sold for £25 on it's own

For that CPU i would have thought you would get more selling it via auction than members market. Just because people on here have better than average hardware knowledge and would not consider that CPU to me worth that much.

yeah logical thinking would say, if you have the money.....sell the 939 whilst its getting good money and get core 2 or quad core setup.

I am hopfully going for a E2180, 2gb and a DS3 motherboard...thats £115 and a most likely 50%+ performance increase when clocked to 3ghz or more

Mame - what chip did you go from before your E2180?

exactly the same as you. s939 3800+ x2 @2.6ghz. I can't really give a direct comparison because changed motherboard, ram (ddr1 to ddr2) CPU and graphics card. I'm just this minute wondering whether to drive to Oc and buy an e7200.
