AMD X2 5000 Black Edition ocing help

Hey all,

Recently I bought a 5000 Black Edition which runs at 2.6Ghz @ Stock.
Having read some things about it I gathered that It would be ok to stick the multiplier up from 13x to 15x right away achieving 3.0Ghz.

Let it be known that I don't know a whole lot about overclocking, especially with regards to RAM/PCI-E timings and such.

I've started having some problems with my computer freezing and games crashing occasionally and i'm guessing that this is down to an unstable overclock.

At first I thought I may have used too much thermal paste and so re-applied only a ball bearing sized blob. This didn't seem to make much difference so I checked all my connections inside my case and found the CPU fan power to be not fully stuck into the motherboard, though it was still in enopugh for it to function - im not sure if this was the cause of a lot of the crashes/freezes.

So now my computer isn't crashing at desktop like it was before when I was just running a movie or something. But I did give Crysis a go today and it crashed.

I suppose I'm wondering how I can best achieve a stable overclock. From what I've heard 200hmz x15 = 3.0ghz should be fine with this CPU, is it possible my motherboard isnt so suitable? What about if I messed with the fsb?

Coretemp might be better to measure your cpu temperature. You didn't say if those temps were idle or loaded ?

Aside from that it's usual to give the Vcore a little bump when overclocking the cpu which I guess you didn't if you only raised the multiplier ? You don't want to do this however if you're already running too hot.

Sure you can use the fsb to overclock but you will then have other factors to consider - memory dividers to keep your memory within its limits and another multiplier to keep the Hypertransport Link around 1000MHz.

For 3GHz I run my 5600 with a 215 fsb, x14 Multiplier, x5 Hypertransport Multi to give 1075MHz, RAM on the DDR2 800 speed = 430MHz

Those temps were at basically idle, I think I had media player running aswell.
Are they pretty high?

A little, but you need to know your load temps.

There's no particular reason why your rig shouldn't do 3GHz stable, but an overclock isn't guaranteed!

The obvious thing would be a little more Vcore to gain stability, but if you're concerned about your temps then sort that out first. Find your load temps and if they're much > 60 I'd reseat your heatsink with a good thermal paste (AS5) or replace it as necessary.

I've noticed the top of my case is very hot and I think its the temperature more than anything else making it crash atm.
I've taken it back down to stock. I've got some AS Ceramique thermal paste.
So it looks like its my cooler, could you reccommend any decent ones, but not too expensive of course. About ~£25 would be my limit

Are you using the stock heatsink ? I used to use a Scynth Ninja, that and the Tuniq Tower and Thermalright 120 are all top end air coolers for around £25. Someone may have a better suggestion, I'm on water now.
 
Yesterday I put the multiplier back down to 13x - stock @ 2.6Ghz and just earlier my PC shut down on its own. I checked the Bios and CPU temperature straight afterwards and it was about 65 degrees. Now I can only think that there is something seriously wrong with my cooler - http://www.arctic-cooling.com/cpu2.php?idx=80&disc=

Im pretty sure it should be able to handle my BE @ stock, but i've gone and ordered the Tuniq Tower since im thinking that its that AC64 cooler that has something wrong with it.

Is that AC64 a particularily cheap model which coul be expected to give me these problems?

One other thing is that when it is attached to the motherboard th clamp appears to lean to one side which I guess isn't quite normal? It didn't do that on my 939 mobo but it does say its AM2 compatible so I dont know.

I hope this Tuniq Tower sorts it and lets me get back up to 3Ghz stable x(
