I have a AM2 mobo that will support the AMD X2 6000+ that ocuk has for sale at the moment for £47, but is this a good upgrade from a AMD X2 4600+ for that price?
Should I get a new mobo for intel and get a quad? Anybody got a decent quote for just a mobo and CPU upgrade?
Btw I'm restricted to DDR2.

Going from 2.4 to 3.2 GHZ would not be pointeless. It would probably be pretty noticeable. Whether it would be the best choice I don't know. You could recoup some money on the sale of your old chip.

AM2+ mobo £60-80, allows you to re-use your DDR2 and use a new Phenom chip, or athlon
CPU anything from 50-150 really depending on how powerful you want to go
As above a budget and full system specs would allow for better advice

AM2 or AM2+? The AM2+ will support the newer AM3 CPU's and therefore you may be ok with anything up to the current 965. But you'll have to check your mobo for exact support. Which mobo do you have?

My mobo is a M2NPV-VM which sucks as it is only supports AM2 chips.
I have 6GB of DRR2 RAM. I believe it is @ 600MHz.
Graphics is a 260GTX.
PSU is a 450W Corsair VX.

My budget is rather low ~£100. It all depends on the performance price ratio. I may be able to stretch if there is a good deal just beyond reach :)
Btw I'm only prepared to change the mobo and CPU, not really interested if a new CPU needs more power than my PSU can supply.

"It's Out There!"

I just did a build today with the ASUS M4A785TD-M EVO and a Phenom II 550. Board is solid, well presented and good performer. Even managed to unlcock the two deactivated cores on my PII 550 - pretty pleased :)

Do you really need to upgrade? What do you use your PC for?

TBH I think if you upgrade to a low end AM2+/Athlon X2 you'll just find yourself wanting to upgrade again in 6 months. Perhaps save a bit more for a decent DDR3 intel setup?

Gaming mostly, but getting a new DDR3 intel setup is vastly more expensive.......... Wayyyy longer than 6 months............

Thanks for the suggestions so far aswell. That asus board looks good.

I moved from the 4200+ to the 6000+ and it was a pointless move for what I use my system for, whether it would be pointless for the OP or not is a different matter though.

I think I'm gonna wait and get:
Asus M4A785D-M Pro AMD 785G (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard [90-MIB920-G0EAY00Z]

and the

AMD Athlon II X4 Quad Core 620 2.60GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail [ADX620WFGIBOX]

Seems a very powerful CPU and mobo combi for £140

Ideas?

The 6000 in the shop is a windsor core which means it will run hot as hell and prob clock to approx 3.2. If on the other hand he could get his hands on a 6000+ brisbane i would say it would be a wise £50

Yup, I had the Windsor core 6000+, and it certainly does run hot..

The highest I had it clocked to was 3.5GHz also, but the heat it puts out was unreal compared to the 4200 it replaced, the only reason I swapped chips is because I accidentally bent a few pins on my 4200+ when I was installing it into another board.

@OP, that combo should make for a nice upgrade.
