AMD x2 or just AMD

so to go conroe ill be spending an extra £60 and thats putting a massive increase on a budget pc

The extra performance is worth staying in a couple of nights.
If it was 150 quid more then maybe but 60 is nothing in relative terms for the performance gain.

but then again, im only after a basic gaming rig, that can run photoshop eveynow and then, i dont want out fancy, just plays music and games thats about it.

considering the above should i go for the AMd 3800x2?

oh and what is Am2's comparison and price inc mobo?

Indeed, you're better off waiting to earn that extra 60. That can't be any more than a few days of work.
While one could argue, that the extra performance from the 60quid is not needed, it's the simple fact that spending that extra amount goes a long way.

Saving 15 quid on a new system on AM2 is not really a good enough reason TBH.

Its perfromance that counts and saying that you could not stretch 15 quid for a conroe is laughable IMO.

There are budget mobo's about that support conroe that are cheaper than AM2 mobo's currently available. That will still offer faster performance than AM2 for less money.

£15?? Where'd you get that from? X2 3800+ is £105, E6300 Retail is £152 - the OEM is £135 plus the cost of a cooler, which the guy above suggested £17 - that's £47 straightaway. Then there's the issue of motherboards costing more, with something like the MSI AM2 K9N 550 being around £58 for a good set of features and available slots - with Intel boards your looking at £88 or more (the ASUS Micro ATX is cheaper, but then it's not got great features at all IMO), and then some of the things such as audio codec look a bit iffy. Altogether, that would be about £77, which as I said, somebody on an ultra budget like me would go for.

The extra amount is nigh on wasted for most people. Why?? Because simply put, if you ran your computer until it could run no more, then you would get the benefit of that extra £60. But as almost everyone upgrades well before the end of the productive life of their equipment, spending the extra £60 shows no benefit, as you do not have the programs to saturate the cheaper processor, and by the time programs use that kind of power, i bet you'll be on the 3rd or 4th upgrade after that system. Spend what you can afford, on what you need, don't worry about anything else.

E6300's can be had for 123 quid inc
Asrock ConroeXFire-eSATA2 can be had for 50
Arctic coolers can be had for 15 quid

That gets you a faster system than a x 3800 even with the limitations of the clocking ability of that mobo.

You get x fire Sata 2 and high definition audio and conroe becomes more attractive still!

Really?

So we dont want faster minium FPS in games?

So we dont want faster encoding times?

So we dont want awsome overclocks?

So we dont want improved technology?

hmmm LMAO :D

The AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400 is a good buy if still on s939.

The 4400 or the x 2 3800 are the two sweet spots in the x2 range. The extra cache on the 4400 is seen as being around 200mhz.

so a x2 3800 clocked at 2.4ghz will perform the same as a stock 4400 @ 2.2ghz

Thanks mate.The X2 4400 it is then!

How much would you value my AMD Athlon64 3200 (Winchester with retail HSF) at? Trying to decide whether to keep it and buy a cheap 939 board for it or to sell it and put the money towards the X2 4400.

Erm to sell it I'd think you'd get around £30 for it. If another rig would be useful to you then hold out a little bit and get a cheap motherboard. If another rig isn't really needed then sell it.

go to a certain high street 'exchange' place that buys 'computer' bits - i got £39 for my 3000+ winchester on saturday

Why does easyrider care so much about buying a conroe system?

Yeah it's faster than anything else you can buy, but it's also more expensive.

easyrider either works for OCUK or Intel, either way ignore him and do what you want.

I'm offering guidance on getting a new system. We all want the fastest we can afford.

Have you actually read this thread?

I have specced a conroe system that is on par with a AM2 cost wise and yet out performs it.

I don't work for OCUK or intel

Its a forum and offering advice about getting a new system and stating getting slower hardware for the same cost is a nonsense.

£17ish for a cooler; See Artic cooler (Intel Range).

The E6300 "almost" beats all it's current pentium range; if you do overclock it - it can beat a £750ish AMD.

Also, do go Dual Core - helps my mate's Photoshop system, also, try and get 1gb or more for memory - if you've not already.

Which AMD chips costs £750?

IS that an FX70 or something?

Thanks, I think £170 to spend on an outdated platform is a lot to extend the life of these existing 939-pin compontents. I'll go for the cheaper X2 I think!
