AMD64 3200 temperature problems?

Hello,

A few days ago I put together a new system based around an AMD64 3200 (Newcastle core). Straight away I noticed that the CPU temperatures seemed a bit high. It's idling at any where between 43 and 49, I haven't looked at load temperatures yet. I'm using an Akasa AK-859 copper cooler and everything is at stock speed.

My guess is that cleaning off the pre-applied thermal compound from the base of the cooler then applying some good stuff and re-seating it should help quite a bit.

Anyone know what kind of temperatures I should be getting from this CPU and core?

Thanks for replies :)

Dont know what temp it should be running at im afraid but i was running a +3000 at about 43C under load with a crappy HSF and my +4800 didnt go above 48-50c with the stock cooling so that does seem a pretty hot idle temp.

Is the room the PC in pretty hot anyway? also is the PC near any sources of heat (radiator, chimney, fireplace, etc)? Is there enough airflow in the case and around it (i have seen PC's running hot when put in the silly little cupboard bits that some desk designers think is a good idea). What is the temp of the other components?

Thanks for the reply.

The case has plenty of cooling (two intake and two exhaust 80mm fans) so airflow shouldn't be a problem.

The other think I noticed which slightly concerned me is that the cooler didn't seem to fit all that tightly when it was installed. Maybe I just need to re-seat the cooler with new thermal compound and see if I can get a tighter fit?

My cpu (I think its a newcastle) idles at about 38, its a 2800+64 though. I think all of the newer venice ones run cooler because i think there was a die shrink.

My 3200+ is cooler than that overclocked to 2.7Ghz with the retail fan. I'd try cleaning the cpu and heatsink and applying some artic silver.

I had a Pentium 4 that was way to hot and when I took the heatsink off I notice the compound had turned to powder  lol I guess thats what happens when you use cheap rubbish for a long time.
