Hi

Am looking to upgrade my pc to dual core. I've been looking at the AMD64 X2 4600+ & the 4800+, & also the Intel E6300 & E6400. I'm not a gamer or an overclocker! I just use my pc to surf the net. Can anybody therefore pick out the better CPU from these please? Can you tell me why?

Thanks :)

All of the chips you mentioned are more than sufficient for net surfing and office apps and the like- there's no reason not to go for the cheapest cpu/mobo/ram combo you can if you're really only using the PC for that sort of thing...

On the other hand, if you go with an AM2 setup you will have the option of popping an Agena core in there in the future should you need a bit more power under the hood at some point in the next 12-18 months.

Thanks Arterion.

Would you say then that an AMD64 X2 3800+ or 4200+ will be sufficient enough? or should I stick to one of the one's mentioned before?

Thanks :)

i can buy a amd64 x2 3800+ for less than a core2duo?? I only use the pc for net surfing...no gaming or overclocking involved. What you think?

well as you would need to change M/B, C2D would be the best value for money option

How do you figure that? There are plenty of AM2 mobos out there at a huge range of prices- first decide on a CPU and then get a mobo which fits your price range.

Actually, at the slightly lower end (i.e. the end he's looking at) the AMD's seem to outperform the similarly priced C2D's, and with AM2 he also gets the future Agena support...

I agree.

If you are not overclocking then AM2 is the only choice. The prices of the AM2 chips are just so damn low it is ludicrous. They are practically giving them away.

3800+
2gigs of PC-5400 DDR2 ram
An ATI 690G based mobo (or Nvidia equivalent) for onboard sound and graphics (unless you want a separate graphics card... which i would recommend just in case you do wanna play SOME games)
A 350+W PSU

Sorted. A damn fast PC that will do everything you want of it for an absolute bargain price.
As said, there is always the option of upgrading to an Agena Quad core if you decide to get a bit more hardcore with the PC usage at a later date.

think i will go with the amd x2 3800+, seems that will be sufficient for what i need it for (& cheap)!! Thanks for the help everyone!! :)

Is the asus m2n-e mobo a good one to get with this cpu then, bearing in mind I'm not an overclocker??

Can't seem to find this motherboard on the OcUK store, but I read a few reviews and it seems a solid choice for what you want it for, although obviously this does not have onboard graphics so you will need to make sure you have a PCI-Express graphics card. That said, I could only find an SLi version of this- surely you don't need SLi? Or is there another version lurking somewhere that i've missed?

The Abit AN-M2 would probably do you nicely if you don't mind going micro ATX, the onboard graphics (Geforce7025) are pretty good in comparison to similar boards, and it's certainly capable of running Aero for Vista if you want it, the board provides DVI and VGA connections, and you can always buy a pcie card later if you want to upgrade the graphics.

Likewise I'd say a X2 3800+ would be perfect for you.

Thanks Arterion & Shade.

I'd like to get a mobo & a seperate graphics card. I don't need SLI, just need a good, reliable mobo, any other suggestions?

Thanks :)

I'd go with a C2D. If you are mostly planning to just browse the web and basic stuff like or word processing, then you don't need something like the e6400 and the e2140 is good enough. You could pick up the PSU, Mobo, CPU and 2GB of DDR2 667mhz for under £200, although you'd need a graphics card.

Code:
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC5300C4 667MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit £52.86
Antec Basic 350W PSU £28.19
Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.60GHz (800FSB) - Retail	£56.39
Asrock 4CoreDual-VSTA (Socket 775) PCI-Express/AGP DDR2 Mobo £46.99
Sub Total : £156.96
Shipping : £8.95
VAT : £29.03
Total : £194.94

Then just pick up a 2nd hand graphics card, or even a 1st hand 7300 GT for some very light gaming :) Could get one of those around the £30 mark.

Just check out the e2140 will outperform most of the lower end AM2 CPUs except at gaming due to its lower L2 cache, which the OP isn't doing.

Heck it might even run cooler due to the 65nm process it is built on.

Plus once you have chosen your CPU and M/B it is roughly priced the same anyway.
