I don't think AMD were intending on disclosing the new x86 high performance CPU quite yet. From what the guys said on the TechReport podcast, it was basically Jim Keller, being a CPU architect rather than a marketing monkey, who just got a little free and easy with talking about upcoming projects during AMD's Core Innovation update.
Yeah, AMD prepared all those slides and showed everyone the 2016 x86 or ARM architecture, so telling everyone, then Jim Keller then went and leaked it.... after the slides told everyone.
You don't hide new architectures, Intel still don't know the internal working and everyone knew AMD had something coming in 2016... so nothing changed. In terms of general goals, industry insiders know stuff way way way way way before official launches. Intel give architecture previews months and months before launch, usually a significant time frame. You can't introduce a new architecture and expect complete software support and industry support if you've kept it secret. Dev's will have VERY detailed programming guides for the architecture months in advance of launch.
AMD will have to work with MS, linux distro's, existing customers to let them know where they are going so big customers can work towards updates to support or utilitise the hardware.
There is no such thing as a secret in this industry, if you even attempt to conceal how the architecture works, how to best program for it, you're shooting yourself in the foot.
