America Chip & Pin

Hey,

Random question - does anyone know if America uses chip & pin with credit cards yet? Or can you still just sign to validate a purchase? Going over soon and forgotten my PIN as I only normally use the card online, hopefully I will get a new one in time...

Didn't when I went to vegas 11 months ago. Just signed for everything.

When we went Florida last December (2010), not one place asked for chip and pin. Some didnt even ask for us to sign.

No chip and pin.
Some places have swipe and type your pin if it's debit, credit cards may ask for your zip code instead. Another method is Paypass where you just put your card against the reader for low cost purchases.

I was in Vegas last September and didn't need at any shops or restaurants as far as I can remember.

I've been doing the East Coast for the last few weeks, in Miami at the moment, and not once have I used my PIN. There are three methods they use, seemingly at random:

a) Just swipe and go.
b) Swipe and sign
c) Swipe and show photo ID

You only need a PIN for ATM's.

I never came across a PIN machine at any checkouts in the US this year. Nor in Spain last month either.
