American Bulldog

Great dogs. I have a bullmastif myself. As with any dog so you will always get people who say dont get a dog like that etc. Yeah they can be vicious but only if they are trained that way

I've been bitten by more small dogs than big ones. Old lady accross the road had a jack Russell and that thing is nasty lol the lady told me she doesn't even like the thing.

My food bill for nine dogs, seven of which are 45kgs or more is less than £35 a week. Depends what you buy, and where you buy it from. Raw unprepared cow and sheeps stomachs (tripe) raw chicken carcasses and VAT free dog biscuits. If you can't feed an adult Dane on £12 a week there's something wrong.

Looking to get another dog next year and having googled Great Danes after reading these last few posts, I think it has made my mind up for me. Amazing dogs, looks like a lanky version of my lab (the yellow ones I saw on google anyway).

What VAT free dog food do you buy out of interest? I know most of the working dog varieties fall under this but do you have to be careful with how much you give since I assume these give off more energy quickly, which isn't great for larger dogs with slow metabolisms.

Make sure you do your research, they're generally problem free if they're living environment suits them, they don't like being alone for long periods of time for example. You have to be careful feeding them too as they are prone to bloat, so you have to give it a good hour or so after they've devoured their huge meal before taking them out for a walk or playing with them. Make sure you get a good insurance policy too!

Dr. John's Silver it's a maintenance feed for adult and older dogs.

I did a bit of research on the Dr Johns food and it appears to be towards the bottom of the 'good food for your dog' list, pretty much like my Skinners F&T 23 I give to my dog. Don't flame me but I think some breeders, trainers and working dog owners are a little stuck up when it comes to dog food. The Skinners my dog (and previous Lab) eats has had it since being a puppy (puppy version for first year though) and he's very healthy and seems fine. Small stools and solid every day.

I may give this Dr Johns a try next time I need to order my Skinners.

Yeah I have read up on them and my house seems a good fit for a dog that size. 3 bed detached with medium garden. 10 min walk from main park or 1 min walk to a small park. With my new job working 4pm/6pm till midnight and my wife who works in same place that would be doing 6am/7am till midday or 1pm the dog would have company all day and not alone for very long. He or she would have a Lab and a cat for company plus I have a little boy who would keep it occupied whilst it's a very small puppy. Probably 2 weeks by the sounds of things.:D They do grow fast.

In December last year, We found this chap wondering around our street stinking to high heaven, Skinny and dangerously dehydrated.,
We took him in, Informed the dog warden, He came round to scan for a chip and put his mug shot online.

no one claimed him so we have him permanently. This is him the day he turned up and then 6 months later..

We believe him to be American bulldog X Staffie X something else.. Any ideas?

What a lovely looking dog, and well done to you as well :)

Blimey that is cheap, just over a tenner at PetsAtHome for 15KG.

Mine is on Beta Large Puppy food at the moment but will certainly look at alternatives once he's old enough.

My vet is car mad, so I tend to look after his cars and he looks after the animals. Money rarely changes hands for labour. He is honest enough to admit the Science Diet and other exotic brands found on veterinary practice's shelves bring in a very healthy profit margin, and as most dogs in the UK are tending to over weight and a lack of exercise I have found adult dogs do well on the less expensive products, complete food wise. As you were talking earlier about a dog to guard the house I found a photo of an Italian acquaintance's wife with their two little "darlings". I think he fancies himself as some sort of Mafia type ;)
