Hi all

The fridge section of our fridge freezer, which is a pretty old Whirlpool unit, seems to have packed up. Freezer is fine but the fridge is not cooling.

From looking at JL and AO, the choice for plumbed units seems to basically be Samsung. What do people have / recommend? Is there any simple troubleshooting I can try do you reckon?

We've had a non-plumbed (no water/ice) samsung for 7+ years.

It's been brilliant. It cools everything in a timely manner, very quiet, and just cools everything so well! A bit annoying when I have to wait a bit longer for ice-cream to soften :p

We have an LG double unit, plumbed in for ice/water, and we really like it.
Thanks what model please?

The Samsungs are a bit pricier but I assume are a cut above LG etc. in build quality.

We've got a non plumbed in Samsung and it's been ace for the last 8 years.

I didn't fancy a watercooler/ice maker one as you lose so much storage in the freezer door area and the freezer is already quite small as it is. It'd be fine if you've got another freezer elsewhere in the house i guess but it's our only one.

Samsung here, left hand freezer then 2 doors on the right, which is good because means you're not letting all the cool air out, and also means can use the door as shelf when making a drink ;D , 3.5 years old has been good so far. Plumbed in does lose a bit of space, but we live in a hard water area so wouldn't have one without.

Does it make any difference if you adjust the temperature settings (the 1-5 dial in most fridges)?

Is the fridge making any new noises or has stopped making old noises?

Do you have a good local appliance repair guy that can quote you? The Euronics shops sometimes do.

Both LG and Samsung are South Korean companies that offer well-engineered products. I would say LG has the edge.

Here's a list of fridge freezer manufacturer websites for your research.

Any ice forming under the bottom draw in the freezer, or on back cover in freezer.

Had our AEG RMB954F9VX for almost 2 years, it's a beast.

Agree with Reuben Klang about French style, you use the freezer bit less often and actually the drawers feel like you get more in. And the fridge bit is then all easy height and also feels massive.

Also has a drawer which has variable temp settings, so you can keep wine/beer at more like 1 or 2 degrees, which is perfect temp.

Ours is a plumbed in, and you won't regret it. Cold water and ice on tap is so good, only downside is the water comes out a little slow but our pressure isn't great, and the filters aren't cheap but we just make them last a year instead of 6 months.

We’ve got a Samsung Smart fridge plumbed in. Previously had a Samsung one for maybe 10 years which was great but I couldn’t resist the smart one. Plumbing it is simple, it has it’s own removable jug, the ice is placed in little draws with their own scoop and nothing gets frosted up. Plus it’s got a big tablet in the front. Oh and integrates with Smartthings.

The “single fridge with double doors” arrangement means it is huge.

Downsides - 6 month filter for it is about £90 and difficult to source so you end up buying a couple. You need a big kitchen.

That’s the model up from mine, personally I don’t see or feel the need for the screen. Although as a doodle pad I think it’d be amazing.

The compressor thing is just a load of ********, they’re all danfoss R600 compressors that are tiny.

Just for information, Samsung sell their own filters for £29, but anyone can get two if you look around. https://www.samsung.com/uk/home-appliance-accessories/accessory-filter-hafex-hafex-exp/

As for the compressor, I have no info on what Samsung use on standard fridge freezers but the Danfloss doesn't seem like a invertor version they use with the ones that have a 20 year warranty. However this seems to be a replacment https://www.orionairsales.co.uk/sam...nverter-compressor-r410a--415v50hz-9341-p.asp

blimey best touch wood had a samsung plumbed in model for about 4 years now change filters regularly, never missed a beat had it of gumtree, local couple moving home and it didnt fit there new house only gave a couple of hundred for it and they got the removal people to deliver it :). hate to think how much it was new ice and water unit in left door.
only thing we find to grump about is there is never enough space in the freezer, (coming from a chest freezer have to be economical when shopping).

If non plumbed is of interest, I recently bought this Haier. It's a great setup, really nice, but pretty wide.

Bought this about 18months ago looking for a slim depth fridge freezer and its superb, never liked the American style so opted for a full size upright fridge and separate freezer in the planning stages, unfortunately had to make a non structural wall structural and lost some space for 4 side by side appliances in the utility. First time with a French style and its great, the fridge is massive!!!.

Also have a Haier direct drive washing machine which is great.

Aye ive got got that fridge and it's pretty good. Mine was £1175 from an offer at John Lewis, don't think I'd pay silly money for the tablet part but having ice is nice

I remember commenting on your kitchen thread about the song it sings when the door is open. Mine is different though, couldn’t do without the beverage zone (hidden door on the top left panel) with the jug :D
