American Vista on UK PC

Can't remember, was taught about it when doing a business studies A level, it's the same law that allows shops like game to sell 2nd hand games even though they say "not for resale" and allows .

Yes but the corporates won the battle against the sale of R1 DVD's into the UK remember? so im thinking this still holds true.

Doesnt stop the buyer though, just restricts his ability to find supply.

Theres a law that prevents manufacturers from dictating how their products are sold.

Asda was prevented by Levi from importing non EEC jeans into the UK and selling them at a discount. The European Court of Justice ruled that Levi had the right to stop Tesco importing its merchandise from the US. I don't recall that ruling being overturned.

I have the OEM just now b ut go to the states in August so I will be picking up Home PRemium Retail I think. Plus the good thing is I'll probably buy some parts over there too due to the price difference :) the fun!

Good idea :) Big companies like Microsoft support globalisation when it suits them, ie using third world countries to produce their OS discs. When you want to take advantage of the global village to buy their OS at a sensible price, they're not so keen any more. :p

I have heard some crazy arguments justifying the cost of Vista in this country & the only real factor it comes down to is MS charging a price that they think the market will afford. Its upto all of us to show them that the market will not stand this price. ;)

I'd love to see ASDA or Tesco selling imported US versions of Vista for sensible money. Something like £195 for Vista Ultimate retail instead of the current £329. Even if they were stopped, the resulting publicity could change MS pricing policy for the good of all UK people. :)

£1 = $2 now, so there's never a better time to do this.

I bought my Vista Ultimate Retail from the States, got charged by UK Customs and it still worked out over £100 cheaper than buying it over here. Delivered cost was about £170... it's a no-brainer.

Activated online, no hiccups or issues.

My G/Fs got me Vista H P and bringing it back Friday so this has been an interesting read. Cost about £84 for upgrade version :p .
I think people should get over the MS big brother thing, personally I have managed to reinstall an OEM XP Home 3 times by saying my motherboard failed without any trouble they are just told to as standard questions. Also got an XP Pro Academic Upgrade edition and used that with no restriction for £75.
They are not the CIA and can't monitor everyone
P.S on G/Fs Monarch flight to Orlando seats where £69 return day before departure

Just to clear this up.

For someone to send me Vista (person to person, not buyer to seller) from another country is perfectly legal - with import duties paid?

There seems to be an unsureness about this, even though many seem to have practised it and I just wanted to be 100% sure on things.

Not quite that simple. And depends on the version of Vista.

If you're referring to the States it doesn't matter if someone sends you something, or if you buy it - you're still liable to pay Duty & VAT. The only exception to this is if the item is a gift (only valid if item has a declared value less than £18 from memory) or if you already previously owned the product (e.g. a warranty repair/return).

If you import from an EU country you aren't liable for any charges as you will have already paid the corresponding VAT for it.
