AMG GT R - Der Tag

Same driver, very little in it.

Interesting to see the differences and the Ring is always a good all round test of a cars characteristics.

Yeah for me it’s just how it feels might be the carbon tub coming into effect but it just has proper race car feels, whereas the GT3 and 458 felt like very sorted road cars that were track capable the 600 feels like a honed race car that has then been made to also work on the road something it does so well. For me it trumps the GT3 on track and is night and day better on road, GT3 does not even compare and hence having owned one they are very overhyped.

It does seem like he is struggling more to get the nose in on the 600LT, and hold it in mid corner and that is likely tyres which seem to make more noise, based on a quick watch. 600LT picks up speed more quickly and both hitting 300ish under the bridge on the main straight is incredible not least as he carries that speed under the bridge. Merc is more settled and think I said before it does flatter the driver on track but can see how that would make the 600Lt more of a challenge.

Interesting for me is how well the Merc held on to the GT3 race car (could not make out if it was another GTR or Z4) car for a bit, quicker a touch on the straight bits but gobbled up under braking and left, right, left type affairs as expected. Two great cars getting a similar result in different ways.

To be honest, ar1s are amazing track tires so timing wise it’s hard to compare to ps4s.

I’ve heard similar about a gt3. Know a guy who sold his and he said while it was very capable it was also quite boring all around compared to other stuff he owns/drives - ultima for e.g.
I did a road trip into Wales a while back with a mixed bag of cars but one mate was in his 991 GT3 RS. Following him closely did for my windscreen sadly but no way could he get away from me and coming out of corners if he was in the wrong gear I was gone. Once moving and with dry roads the Merc is as quick as you will ever need and the engine delivers power from so low down it’s effortless.

McLaren under tyred the 600 LT on purpose, to dial fun into the car, unfortunately the 225 front tyres cause understeer, also McLaren don’t setup the cars alignment from factory well either.

I stick with 225/285 for road as it allows for a fair bit of power over steer which I enjoy.

On track I run 235 / 305 tyres which solves the understeer issues and the 305 out back remove any wheel slip, hooks up every gear wide open throttle. Also alignment is setup for road / track, on track it’s just mind blowing never had any issues passing any Porsche including latest 992 GT3 RS though they were not easy, admittedly they are the quicker car but on the day I was more confident and/or the better driver. :)

GT3 are like VTEC if your in the wrong gear a V8 or Turbo car will embarrass one. My 458 was somewhat quicker than my GT3 and the 600 is vastly quicker and like yours it’s also got torque so even if your not in a lower gear it’s got mid range to still pull hard.

Beauty of GT3 and 458 is the noise and scream of 9000rpm, amazing engines and gearbox. But the 600 still revs to 8000, sounds decent with exhaust right behind my head and with only circa 1300kg to pull and twin turbo torque it goes OK, it hits 100mph in under 6s but it is the baby LT. :)

Was gonna say that must have been done awhile ago, then saw it was 7 years - you can't take some of those lines any more especially the curb at the bottom of Foxhole (which is one to watch out for if you've previously driven it on the more aggressive line over the curb and aren't aware of the change - couple of people already wrecked their cars on it).

SOLD!

I will do a write up about my last 4 years with the car at some point, but I sold it to Redline Specialist Cars in Yorkshire today for solid money, who were great to deal with. Nothing incoming at this time, wanted to use the cash for other stuff.

The final shot.....

What an EPIC car it has been.

Sometimes it’s just nice to have the cash. I seem to be in a similar phase for now.

What’s next?
Not sure really. I have for sometime wanted a Ferrari and though the F12 I loved the look of I did not fully gel with it when I drove it, it is a GT without the R bit, but I like the R bit.

McLaren can't be ignored and having run down to the Ring last year with a mate in a 765 I know how astonishingly quick they are in how he left me standing on the straights, I mean huge speed difference.

I am also in love with the 992 GT3 RS but only at list price.

For now I wanted the cash out of the Merc (which I owned in full) for other stuff and will pick up my next car in a few months. I am off to Spa and the Ring soon, but not to drive the track just for the beers and craic this time.

:(

Should have asked me mate
I would have doubled their offer!

Seriously though, what an awesome looking car

Saw one on the road about a week ago, simply beautiful

Around 4.5 years ago, I was chatting cars with my car nut friends on our WhatsApp group chat, just like most days. Some days it's quiet when people get busy but not that often, but most weeks will see someone announcing a new car, their next purchase or an addition to their collection of road and race cars. It's not a big group, circa 15 including me, but I am not like most of them, I have to be a bit more selective on what and when I buy. On this day however, after a few days of pictures and links the view was clear and unanimous.

That is the car for you Housey, get it bought!

What a 4 years of car ownership and what a superb car it has been, my best so far. It's not been all roses in the garden however. Mercedes dealerships are, based on the 4 or 5 I used over those year, consistently rubbish. Be it trying to rip me off on tyres, not doing the job well (3 services, 3 over fills of oil), taking the car on road tests for no reason, crap diagnosis meaning constant revisits, terrible car washing when asked not to and just general can't be arsed they ruin that part of the ownership experience.

Other issues were new suspension bits early doors after a sensor showed an error, similar a couple of years later with engine mounts, again showing up on a sensor and both fixed under warranty at no cost to me. I managed to do a windscreen after a speedy run across a mountainside in Wales about 1mm from the back of a GT3 RS, which is my own fault and paid to have a proper screen fitted, £1200 of my own money. Replaced a seatbelt buckle which was triggering an airbag issues, again under warranty and I think 4 sets of tyres over 26K miles, so not too bad really for such power and use.

Annoyingly I managed to put 2 small chips on the drivers door when cleaning the car not 6 weeks or so back, which of course made me happy as it was the day before someone was coming to view it.....and didn't because of the chips in the door! I had to have a new front nearside wheel after a house brick event, that cost £1800 as they are the lightweight ones and showed itself at Manthey Motorsport in Germany when they were fitting new wheel weights. Finally the wheels did start to corrode which was annoying and Mercedes didn't want to help on that front, but to be fair I did not push them hard and think they might have if I had and that covers the issues (that I can remember).

In summary a massively fast road and track car that flatters the driver and makes it easy to drive quickly. It is as you might expect stiffly damped, even in the softest setting but rides FAR better than my old GT3 did and my R8. The engine is incredible with torque from nothing to the red line and that is what makes it so effortless to go quick and in Sport mode with the paddles changing gears it's a riot, with pops and bangs of proper supercar level that make BMW, VW, Audi and Mercedes fast saloons run for cover, they are very naughty and loved :)

Driving position was perfect, low and perfect position, though it takes time to get used to a 2.1m wide car with a bonnet that reaches the next county, but once you are familiar with it the car wraps around you, is really easy to place on road/track and with the 4w steering has an amazing front end that rarely if ever understeers unless at crazy limits. Tyres, being Cups need care in wet conditions and did a couple of times give me kittens but when hot and dry they are simply perfect for the car, removing any sense of wheelspiin. In the wet at 100mph, put your foot down and it will light the rears, that's what proper quick cars do, as is 0-100 in circa 6.5 seconds. The 0-60 question is often asked, but that's nothing special as it has to get going but when it does it's quick.

I could go into loads of details but I'd bore myself but if anyone wants to know more feel free to ask.

The brakes were also incredible and I will add a story to show that....

Driving a local road one quiet morning, carrying some speed, I came around a left hand corner to be confronted by 3 cars stopped in the middle of the road all watching a mini burn itself to death in front of them. It was one of those "oh ****" moments and being and ex Polo GTi owner I am of course, special. So I looked for gaps, began to move myself to the other side of the road, to avoid said line of cars and stamped on the anchors.

I stopped 3-4 car lengths back from the nearest car on the opposite side of the road, I fully expected to run out of brakes but how wrong I was.Just epic brakes and thankfully I had them up to temp and was left foot braking.

Waiting eagerly to see what's next for you :D . Shame to hear you had similar issues with the dealers, I too had tried to claim corrosion but on the tailpipes, the car was less than a year old, always washed and cleaned with PH neutral products and was constantly fobbed off. Never mind all the issues with test drives, them damaging all 4 wheels when the tyres were replaced etc. Just felt like so much could have been avoided, or even if they came clean I wouldn't have minded as much. Instead it was excuses or denial until evidence was provided. Really did sour my experience with Mercedes.

Was there 1 experience you had that stands out when you think of the car?

There are a few that stand out, but two great road trips, one to Scotland I posted about and one to Wales were both memorable.

The Scottish one using a route that emphasised great roads over the scenery of the NC500 had one memorable moment. A small group of us that are simply quick, followed one another for around forty minutes on a section of incredible empty smooth beautifully flowing road at proper pace that was just perfect.

2 x E92 M3’s (both properly sorted for track)
1 x AMG GT R (yours truly)
1 x McLaren 720
1 x Lambo Performante

Left to right to left to right to left to right all smooth, safe and beautiful to drive in a respectful convoy with drivers who know what they are doing.

Another in Wales following my mate in his M2 with another in a 991 RS was epic and ended up with my windscreen broken. Great roads, great visibility and empty of anyone. There are great roads in the UK you just have to find them. Respect the locals, respect the places with people and enjoy when the road is all yours with no one else near.

I can talk about Ring laps and Spa laps too and a wet Silverstone where i could have walked faster, but frankly there were many great stories.

One small story from Scotland was outside Balmoral Castle. We all parked up, 15 or so epic cars and a woman makes a be-line for me. AMG GT R her dream car and she was in tears nearly as she sat in it whilst her hubby took pics. Wasn’t bothered about the shiny Lambos, Ferraris and odd famous face with us, she wanted my car.

Nice.

You will certainly miss it!
Think they are a motoring bargain as rare sight on roads and very capable.

Mate sold his 600 LT Spider and dropped into a green GTR, as he made money on LT and dropped into GTR with cash in his pocket. He ain’t said much about it yet other than it drifts good.

You’ll miss it!
