Around 4.5 years ago, I was chatting cars with my car nut friends on our WhatsApp group chat, just like most days. Some days it's quiet when people get busy but not that often, but most weeks will see someone announcing a new car, their next purchase or an addition to their collection of road and race cars. It's not a big group, circa 15 including me, but I am not like most of them, I have to be a bit more selective on what and when I buy. On this day however, after a few days of pictures and links the view was clear and unanimous.
That is the car for you Housey, get it bought!
What a 4 years of car ownership and what a superb car it has been, my best so far. It's not been all roses in the garden however. Mercedes dealerships are, based on the 4 or 5 I used over those year, consistently rubbish. Be it trying to rip me off on tyres, not doing the job well (3 services, 3 over fills of oil), taking the car on road tests for no reason, crap diagnosis meaning constant revisits, terrible car washing when asked not to and just general can't be arsed they ruin that part of the ownership experience.
Other issues were new suspension bits early doors after a sensor showed an error, similar a couple of years later with engine mounts, again showing up on a sensor and both fixed under warranty at no cost to me. I managed to do a windscreen after a speedy run across a mountainside in Wales about 1mm from the back of a GT3 RS, which is my own fault and paid to have a proper screen fitted, £1200 of my own money. Replaced a seatbelt buckle which was triggering an airbag issues, again under warranty and I think 4 sets of tyres over 26K miles, so not too bad really for such power and use.
Annoyingly I managed to put 2 small chips on the drivers door when cleaning the car not 6 weeks or so back, which of course made me happy as it was the day before someone was coming to view it.....and didn't because of the chips in the door! I had to have a new front nearside wheel after a house brick event, that cost £1800 as they are the lightweight ones and showed itself at Manthey Motorsport in Germany when they were fitting new wheel weights. Finally the wheels did start to corrode which was annoying and Mercedes didn't want to help on that front, but to be fair I did not push them hard and think they might have if I had and that covers the issues (that I can remember).
In summary a massively fast road and track car that flatters the driver and makes it easy to drive quickly. It is as you might expect stiffly damped, even in the softest setting but rides FAR better than my old GT3 did and my R8. The engine is incredible with torque from nothing to the red line and that is what makes it so effortless to go quick and in Sport mode with the paddles changing gears it's a riot, with pops and bangs of proper supercar level that make BMW, VW, Audi and Mercedes fast saloons run for cover, they are very naughty and loved
Driving position was perfect, low and perfect position, though it takes time to get used to a 2.1m wide car with a bonnet that reaches the next county, but once you are familiar with it the car wraps around you, is really easy to place on road/track and with the 4w steering has an amazing front end that rarely if ever understeers unless at crazy limits. Tyres, being Cups need care in wet conditions and did a couple of times give me kittens but when hot and dry they are simply perfect for the car, removing any sense of wheelspiin. In the wet at 100mph, put your foot down and it will light the rears, that's what proper quick cars do, as is 0-100 in circa 6.5 seconds. The 0-60 question is often asked, but that's nothing special as it has to get going but when it does it's quick.
I could go into loads of details but I'd bore myself but if anyone wants to know more feel free to ask.
