Hi folks,
Well, i've just bought a Fli Trap 12" Active Sub (
http://www.fliaudio.co.uk/) from an auction for £63. Its my first sub, so I'm not too clued up about what I need. I need a fitting kit it seems - they seem have to have different wattage ratings. How important is this, which figure do I pay attention to (i.e. the sub/amp is 300W RMS, or 1000W peak), and can anyone recommend a particular kit? I've spotted this one:

Would that be ok for me?
Cheers,
Matt
I'm not claiming i know a lot about car audio but i know enough not to kill myself of my car.
Having installed subs and amps in 2 cars now i think i'm pretty clued up.
Anyways...
To be honest i would go for a 4 Gauge wiring kit. This is step higher than the one you linked to in your post so if in the future you wish to upgrade your sub/amp then it is possible without having to re-wire the whole car.
4 gauge is what i used in my car, i'm running a 300watt RMS amp connected to 2 x 150watt RMS subs.
All is running well and have had no problems at all.
If you are planning a big install (i mean if you are wanting to upgrade your sub/amp and run multiple amps) then i would recommend a 1 gauge wiring kit.
If you're just sticking with that 1 sub/amp and maybe something a little more powerful in the future then i would go for a 4 gauge wiring kit, this is what i would recommend in your case.
An average wiring kit comes with:
1 x 5m Power cable (this goes from battery to rear of car)
1 x fuse + fuse holder (these are sometimes called in-line fuse+holder if they are already attached to the power cable, if they are not attached to the power cable then it is easy to do yourself. The fuse should be placed within 30cm of the battery to stop any power fluctuations)
1 x 5m RCA (phono) cables (this is a signal cable that goes from back of headunit to amp)
1 x 5m remote turn-on cable (this is a signal cable that goes from back of headunit to amp, this tells the amp to switch on when the headunit turns on)
1 x 1m Earth cable (this earths the amp)
1 x 4m speaker cable (this connects your amp to your sub, you may not need this cable as your sub/amp is all enclosed in a box)
Extra bits:
Crimp connectors
Cable ties
Spare fuse
In a 4 guage wiring kit the earth and power cable are 4 guage and can basically handle more power.
I always swear by Autoleads wiring kits but have also heard that CAD's own wiring kits are not bad at all. They claim to use the same cables as Autoleads except Autoleads just brand their one with their name (hence higher price).
You can't go wrong with this wiring kit:

It's only £20 and as i said, you can't go wrong with CAD's stuff.
Just a few tips when wiring your car:
Know where the grommet is (it's a rubber seal that goes between the car's cabin and engine bay). This can usually be found behind the glovebox and will usually have a bunch of wiring going through to the engine anyway, just open the hole up a tad more to get your battery cable through.
DO NOT DRILL A HOLE YOURSELF UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!
Keep power cables and signal cables opposite sides to eachother. This stops you getting interference in the sub.
Find a good earth for your amp. I used a bolt under the rear seats in my car, worked fine.
Don't rush wiring up your car. Take your time and do it properly.
You'll need to route the power and signal cables underneath the carpet, make sure they dont get in the way of the front seat sliders.
Essential things you will need:
A couple of screw drivers (to poke a hole through the grommet and to secure wiring in amp)
Stanley knife (to cut away plastic outer of cable at connections)
Cup of tea and plasters (to chill out afterwards and to nurse all those cuts you get from hiding your wiring under the carpet and behind plastic trim)
To be totally honest it is not hard to wire up a car.
Before you start wiring up your car i would 100% recommend you find the grommet otherwise you will spend ages looking for it.
What car is it by the way? i may know where the grommet is.
Hope the above helps you and post some pics of your finished install.
