I've just got a pair of 200watt PA speakers cheap. My mate bought them brand new and used them once for a party, and never used them again. His Mrs has been on at him to get rid of them for ages so I got them for £25. Bargain.

Now, I will be adding these to my current setup - 2xTechnics 1210's, a Vestax PCV180 mixer and a Numark Axis 9 CD deck.

At the moment i've got one active speaker which I use as a monitor. Im thinking of placing 1, or maybe both of these new speakers towards the back end of the room just to boost the overall volume up a bit, keeping my monitor in front of me.

I'm going to need an amp or could I run it off an old hifi? - I don't know much about passive speakers, i've always had active ones in the past. If I did get an amp would it have to give 200watts per channel out, to power the speakers sufficiently?

How much should I be looking to spend?

Many thanks. :)

Hmm, you'll need a very beefy amplifier to get 200 watts out of the speakers. I recommend you look at the Superfi website, as well as Sevenoaks and Audiofile Objective who all stock fairly high end equipment.

You may be looking at getting a separate power amplifier and pre amplifier which will cost upwards of £900 at the minimum for both, or maybe bridging two power amplifiers.

That might be a possibility, though make sure you shop around for something you like the sound of and that fit's within your budget.

I wouldn't bother with places like sevenoaks etc, as the amps there won't be designed for PA speakers, and hence might be more expensive than you were expecting. Look at dedicated DJ shops, or even better, second hand kit.

Sounds like those speakers aren't suited to high quality reproduction if its PA equipment so you'll not be needing pre amps etc just a big beefy amp which you could get from a PA retailer, it'll be cheaper than the equilvent audiophile thing by a factor of about x10 but because they're PA you wouldn't be able to hear the difference anyway have a look at this sort of stuff http://www.dv247.com/icat/61 (I don't know about DJ stuff and thats a random google btw)

You don't want a really powerful amp, 200W is what the speakers will handle without blowing up, so you want to be aiming for that or less to make sure you don't over power them :)

Cheers for the quick replies.

Yeah, i've got my monitor which is perfect for monitoring the mixes etc and is more than loud enough for me, but its not too loud at the other end of the loft. Plus I just couldn't turn these down at £25!

Will have around at amps, i'm sure i've got an old Kenwood seperates system somewhere though so I might them off that to start with.
