Hello Guys,

Im thinking of planning a little trip to Amsterdam next year. There will be 2 of us and we are thinking of going just before the peak season so maybe March/April time.

Does anyone have any experiences of the city at off peak times?

Also i have a budget in mind of roughly £500-£600 each, so at least £1,000 for 2 adults over 4-5 nights. This would hopefully include flights, hotel, food and all other entertainment that is on offer.

Is this realistic or too much/too low, generally any advice would be appreciated

Did you join a computer hardware forum to ask about how to get high? ;)

Food will be the most expensive part except the hostel/hotel/boat, so try and find an Albert Heijn, they're hidden everywhere.
Get stroopwafels.

£500-600 each should be enough I think.

Flights should be cheaper if you book early and can be flexible on dates and days. £60 for a return flight isn't unrealistic.

A night in an OK hostel could cost you as little as £20 a night but be prepared to spend £30 or more.

Beer is pricey. A pint (1/2 litre) will cost you about £5. Try to scout around for happy hours. Sometimes you can chain them together for a cheapish night out.

As for "entertainment" it depends what you're after but it could eat up your budget very quickly.

That amount of money should be plenty. Off-peak, it's still Amsterdam really is all I can say! :p

As mentioned, when you get there, find your nearest Albert Heijn and stock up your hotel room. Amsterdam is bloody expensive -- you'll quickly find yourself blowing Euros like nobody's business on food and drink at bars/restaurants.

So would you advise hostels above the bog standard hotel rooms in the city centre?

I was going on very early estimates of:

£90 for flights PP
£250 for hotel room PP

Then roughly leaving £200 each spending money.

You're probably not going to spend that much time in a hotel room. Personally, I think you're better off staying in hostels. It'll save you money and you can meet some new people.

Hostel World is a great site.

I stayed at Shelter City the last time I was in Amsterdam. About £20 a night in a 12 man dorm, price includes a locker and breakfast, and it's centrally located.

Be aware that it is run by Christians. They don't allow drink or drugs on the premises and their doors shut at about 2am in the off-season but stay open most of the night during the busier parts of the year.

Found this little place Bees B&B

Its a bit expensive for a hostel but im going with the GF, yeah i know dont give me stick, so a bit of privacy would be nice.

Also it gives us the option to cook a few basic meals and not have to eat out every meal hopefully again saving money.

What do you guys think?

If you can make sure you are there for the 30th April. They have a festival in Holland called queens day. It is a great day and Amsterdam is packed. NEVER walk around the red light on your own at night.

Think it was aug or oct i went a few years ago, 15 quid there and back return (easyjet) and stayed there 3 nights iirc which was 90 (30 per night) euros for a bed and breakfast place near hill street blues coffee shop (full of graffiti one) which you exit there turn left cross over and about 1 min along the path. Had a key card for the door shared between me and 3 others.

Food is expensive there so you would need a hundred or two for a few days to go out with unless you travel out of the city and stock up on stuff.

For anyone wanting to go soon.
