  • American dude buys it 4 hours later at $1850, doesn't make an offer.
  • The buyer pays on paypal after a few emails about postage. I paid for he courier which was $120
  • Buyer receives watch & send me very very long email (so wont post it here) about quality not as good as he thought & didn't match my description, saying it was overpriced. Purely cosmetic issues agrees the watch keeps excellent time etc. Wants to know what i'm going to do about it.

  • I reply -

Very sorry to hear you are dissatisfied with the watch & my description of it. I also like to think I am a fair & honest seller on ebay as my feedback would also testify. Here are my thoughts on the situation.

I am no watch expert it’s the only watch I have ever owned that cost more than $20, to me it seemed in excellent condition for a 6 year old watch with general wear & tear. In my description I stated " Please ask any questions or if you require more pics", you did not request any more info or pics & used the buy it now option, this leads me onto my next point. The watch was on ebay at $1850 or best offer you choose to use the buy it now option at the highest possible price so to say it was overpriced is irrelevant. I did choose that price area as I took it to a 2 local watch dealers who offered me $1400 $1500.

Let me have a think on a fair resolution & I will get back to you in the next 24 hours.

Regards

  • His response

I agree to say without qualification that it was overpriced is irrelevant. I say it only in regards to the difference in condition from the description and to the actual condition. I would not have thought it overpriced if it were in fact in excellent condition, otherwise I would not have paid you that much. I also agree that I should have requested some high resolution detailed images. I have purchased several 100 + year old vintage pocketknives from several different individuals in your country over the years and I guess their accuracy in describing the items they had for sale led me to think that all was well and I need not worry.. I should have gotten images, it is my fault. You are correct. I also honestly believe that you are an honest man and not that familiar with watch grading. I never said nor did I think that you intentionally tried to deceive me. I did not mean to insult your integrity, and I am sorry if you understood this to be the case. I'm much better at communicating my thoughts and emotions in person or on the phone than I can do here typing. I apologize. I also think the prices you were quoted are a good approximation of the actual worth of the watch given its present condition. Thank you in advance for your consideration about this.

And once again, I sincerely apologize If I offended you. It was unintentional and really didn't want that to happen.

Yours truly,

  • He then sent me another email an hour later saying he left me good feedback and "I certainly did not want that to be a factor in your decision. Thanks again for your careful consideration."

So my thoughts are that he doesn't have a leg to stand & I would be in the right to not do anything for him. However his obviously trying to play on my conscious & i do consider myself fair so thinking of refunding him the $1850 minus $1500 which I could have got locally & all ebay/paypal fees.

Thoughts?

He's left positive feedback, which pretty much closes the book on it. Move on.

If you're dissatisfied with an item, you hold back on feedback until the matter is resolved, leaving positive feedback is essentially closure to the deal. He may be gambling on your conscience, but it was a bloody stupid gamble to make as he now has no recourse.

The only way he could realistically get his money back is if you offer a return policy and the watch craps out within it. If not, his only other option is to trash it and claim it was damaged in transit, but having emailed you to say that it's working, he wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

Leave it be, it's done with now. :)

Move on, his fault which he has admitted. Don't feel guilty and don't give it another though, no need for any action on your part in my opinion.

Sounds like open and close case. Do nothing.

If you really do feel that you should give him some money, then don't give a full refund... just a partial one (I'd say no more than $200 given the quotes you got). But I wouldn't, he paid the price with Buy It Now, so he obviously thought it was worth the price in the first place.

HOWEVER, would he still be able to start a paypal dispute even though he's given you good feedback on ebay? (anyone?) If so, then you might do well to keep him sweet and give a partial refund rather than risk the whole deal being called off and all the hassle that involves.

mate, when I read it I just pictured a stereotypical type of american who felt worse about offending you than paying extra for a watch, i actually think he's quite genuine and cares more about you having a good image of american people than anything...
