I got a game code for cheap and listed it on the obvious place, the scammers paradise, otherwise known as ebay.
I got the buyer requirements set to strictest level, so what could possibly go wrong...
After listing it, about 15 minutes later, i receive an email notification of purchase and payment, as I have the require immediate payment option set. I'm kinda suspicious, so check my paypal account, money is there, buyer has 150+ feedback, thought maybe just luck this time.
So I email them the code thinking all is good and then...yes you guessed it. Unauthorized payment dispute is opened and paypal put temporary hold on the amount.
The ebay rule with game codes however is to send the printed code/physical voucher to the buyer within 7 days, so I sent that the next morning via RM recorded mail as i was going anyway and submitted the tracking number to paypal dispute.
Fast forward to week later, case is closed. I have the money unblocked.

what a difference a letter with tracking number makes.

not the first time I encountered scammers, but I always won. Either after exchange of few messages or when I supplied paypal the right documents.

It's just annoying and makes you think twice before listing there.

It's a shame you have to go to such lengths just to protect yourself against this kind of thing. I have a phone to sell at the moment but I feel as if I should gumtree (or similar) rather than go the eBay route.

I'm currently £150 down on ebay, which I am slowly making back.

Not proud of myself, but I'm not going to be out of pocket. Ebay refused to help me, so taking matters into my own hands :(

Ebay is great for buying either cheap crap from china or refurbished items from major suppliers/manufactures.

Unfortunately, you have to be in the habit of dotting the i's and crossing the t's in the off chance something goes wrong. It's no longer easy for anyone to just create an account and sell a couple of things due to the risk of scammers.

I'm not familiar with MM rules (and won't be for a while) but I thought you can sell for whatever price you like in there, it's just safer?

There's a 'no profiteering' rule, which gets interpreted as meaning 'you can't sell for more than you paid'. Which isn't what profiteering actually is, and seems a bit of a leap from what I imagine the intention of the rule was at the outset (dunno: before my time), but that's how things roll.

Problem is it is one of the those rules that had to be put in place due to the actions of a small number which then ruins it for every one - but without it you'd get some people taking the mick.

I want to hear more about this

Doing something you are not proud of to get the money back yourself?

I have gone cap in hand to a family friend who works for a solicitors. Helping me with a small case to see if I can get the silly ebay ruling overturned.

I'm not getting my hopes up, this all came about from a monitor sale which was returned to me missing many items, one of which was the expensive stand

ebay don't want to know, it's just automated systems and standard copy/paste replies.

Very frustrating! Good luck!
