An exercise in bangernomics

I'd vote old Volvo for what you need.
I did a similar thing running an old Audi 100 for a couple of years, never had any trouble other than an electric window packing up (fixed it with parts from a breakers). However, soon after I sold it it self destructed  , so a lucky escape from me

Go down your local auctions, get summat from there. Guaranteed to be a banger in the low-price rooms and probably good for some milage :)

There was an Escort for a fiver, no bids at Enfield few months back :D

The problem is, I used to bike 2.6 miles to sixth form each day, this would be 3.2 miles, you get all sweaty etc, not much fun.

Now with my car in the garage it would mean getting my car in/out all the time and moving 3 wheely bins to get to the bike shed, which is now full of car stuff!

For some strange reason I really fancy getting a real banger too. I dunno why but I have this urge to get back to having something that I just don't care about, like when I had my Metro when I was at college. It was great, I just left it anywhere and nobody paid any attention to it at all.
It's an Elise thing. Since getting mine, I find something pervesely thrilling about climbing back in to a car in which I'm anonymous, I can park where I like without worrying about people not seeing me when manouvering...

100 is just being silly, I cant see you doing it for that unless your a mechanic or your gf's milkmans uncle is a scrap merchant or some other provision.

Bike or moped everything else is russian roulette, what agw said is your best bet. Hondas arent cheap normally, everyone knows their rep and thinks they can travel to the sun in one so their price is always higher Ive found.

You need something that no one wants but somehow is actually good underneath, you know your stuff ? If you do and can access a car in the minute it takes to start it up and drive it through an auction hall you might luck out a bargain.

Doing trips of 3 miles is a good way kill a car allready ready to fail

On the contrary, I bought a 205 1.8D for £100 with 2 months Tax and MOT. i thrashed the nuts off it - it was absolutely gutless, but it still gave me over 500 miles to a tank. It started first time, every time, no problems whatsoever.

Sold it 6 weeks later for £100 to a mate. It flew through the MOT, not a single advisory.

I dont think its impossible just very unlikely, its easier when you know the buyer or something like that. Ive given cars away that would do at least another 10k or so but it would have needed at least 100 spent on it.
One car I gave away had blown piston rings I swear, they used it till the mot ran out 9 months later though Iam not sure how

Thinking a little differently, how about a Honda CG125? They don't break, you get 80mpg, £15 a year tax, and cheap insurance. Would cost a little extra to include a lid/CBT, and obviously you wouldn't be able move stuff around, but it's a 'different' suggestion that would no doubt make the journey to the station a little quicker, and possibly a little more fun. :)

Cavalier an excellent choice, 2.0 8v engine is strong and economical and even the worst backstreet mechanics can fix them.

well, shouldn't be too hard to find a car that meets that description. People don't seem to drive old cars like they used to when I was a kid. I was just thinking the other day that you hardly ever see a car past 12 years old on the road now.
My mate scrapped his car recently because nobody wanted it, It was a nissan bluebird with only 32,000 on the clock and was immaculate except for a small car park ding on the front wing.

for that much money, and millage your traveling ie doesn't matter if its a 2liter. Just go around dealears getting rid of old px cheaply. just find waht appears to be a good solid car and buy it. For this cash you can't pick and choose make and model. Just buy the first thing that is decent.

I just bought an old banger, and have to say, in my area certainly, i struggled to find a car that was taxed and had an MOT for less than £200
I looked on Autotrader and ebay and also the local papers.
Eventually ended up getting an F reg 525 from ebay for £260 which i will collect on Saturday.
Not too fussed how long it lasts as im emmigrating in the next month or so. I just needed something to last me a few weeks
