An experience - The Fat Duck

If you want to know as well, service charge is recommended at 12.5%.

I can't stand ti when restaurants recommend a percentage for the service charge or even worse add it automatically!!!

I worked as a waiter for quite some time and worked hard and gave as good a service as possible in order to get tips and I know how nice it is to have your service recognised. As such when I'm out for a meal if the service is good I will tip generously but to be recommended and amount to tip or for it to be automatically added is just wrong in my book!

Still have fond memories of my first meal there. Only problem is, when going back, it's not the same. It's a brilliant one-off but even if I could afford to I don't think I would ever go more than once every few years

It's a shame they don't do a classic tasting menu and a seasonal one, but I imagine it would be a struggle given the size of the kitchen!

I'm keen to try a 3 star in the UK (only been to Guy Savoy) but for me it'd have to be The Waterside rather than The Fat Duck.
I went to The Waterside Inn 2 years ago for my wife's birthday (we also stayed in one of their stunning cottages on the Thames). We had the 6 course taster menu (with accompanying wine) and I was completely stuffed but utterly satisfied. Stunning food with quite probably the best service I've received at a restaurant. Classic French dining compared to The Fat Ducks more theatrical experience.

Cracking review, and for me it reinforces my thoughts that although I'd like to visit The Fat Duck, it is down my list of restaurants to go to.

With the tasting menu do they pick all the dishes for you or do you get to choose yourself? I think the only thing out of all those selections you had I couldnt' bring myself to eat would be the snail porridge. Snails man.... BLEEEERGH!!!!

Great write up, i need to get down here, its only a few miles away. What camera is that btw? great pic quality

It's one set menu. 14 courses, and that's all they serve to you. You can say you have dietary requirements and I think they will switch out some courses (allergies etc...). I think they still give you fourteen courses though, and there was an American couple when we visited who had a different tasting menu clearly, but I've no idea what their requirements are. You could phone up and say you don't eat snails and see what they say. That said, I've had snails a few times in my life, and these were very good :p

Looks like a great experience and write up, will read properly when I get home. I have always been interested but not sure I could justify ~£200, I swear it wasn't that long ago when it was around £130.

It's gone up a lot in the last 4-5 years. I think it was £100 more per person uplift between my first and second visit 4 years apart!
