Hello all,

I'm in the market for a new Desktop.

After umm-ing and ahh-ing for the last couple of months and almost buying a pre-built touchscreen unit from, (gasp) PC World I've decided to do it myself.

I'm not very technically minded and have never built a computer before (though I have some experience in destroying them). So I'm looking for some help in coming up with spec idea's.

I'm looking to spend around £1500 for everything. Monitor, mouse, keyboard etc... (Except Office, which the missus will use for uni work)

My requirements are that I'm looking to use it for gaming, but I'm not a massive gamer. anything that can run KOTOR 1 and 2 and possibly BF3 at a decent rate is good enough.
My other requirement would be for it to look awesome, which I understand is personal preference but after looking around I'm thinking maybe white/red case with some visible neon kicking around. I really like the Alienware laptops so think backlit keys and that kind of thing.
Also a half decent monitor (not touchscreen) and SSD are on the cards.

I do have a friend who has offered to help me build it but I'd prefer to do it myself so if people know a case is particularly hard to work with or some bits of hardware can be problematic then I'd like to avoid that. (Any troubleshooting I may have to do post-build I'll need to teach myself how to do... Well youtube will, so I'd like to avoid it)

Once I've gone firm on something I'll post a step-by-step diary with pics (and injuries/accidents) for everyone to enjoy or laugh at.

BTW I'm nearly 30 and have just decided I'm going to be good with computers... Mid-life crisis anyone?... Good thing I can't afford a sports car.

Questions are welcome and all help is very much appreciated.

Hi, welcome to the forums.
It's best to say what size of monitor you want and what resolution you will game at.
Assuming you only want a single monitor say for example 24", you would not need to spend anywhere near £1500 to get the desired results.
I'd reckon £800-900 would get you a hell of a system.

The "core" of it, needs a case (suggest you pick that since you'll be looking at it). Picked the RAM so you could co-ordinate a white coloured build if you want to, otherwise scrap that for some cheaper stuff. The i5 3570k and the Radeon 7850 will be more than enough for gaming at 1080p.

There are a few white monitors around if you want to go 100% themed, couldn't find any white Z77 mobos though.

Wow, you guys are quick... I'll take a look through these and see if I can find a white monitor...

I'm thinking white and neon blue or red and black then.

Is mobo one of the better monitors? I was thinking 27" but I'd like to go LED as opposed to LCD. That's just from my experience with TV viewing... Is there any downside to using and LED for gaming?

A lot of monitors these days use LED-backlit screens, which are pretty much some of the best stuff out there. They are then split into 2 main types- TN (Twisted Nematic) and IPS (In Plane Switching). TN panels generally have faster response times and can have greater refresh rates (most monitors are 60Hz-60 times per second- but some go up to 120Hz which is an advantage for FPS games). However, TN panels have poor viewing angles aka looking from the sides, and also their colour reproduction isn't as good.

IPS panels generally have slower response times and 60Hz refresh rates but far superior colour depth and production. They are usually a little more expensive as well, but are definitely an option.

Personally I would recommend going for a monitor over a TV, and at your budget I'd be looking at a 24" or 27" monitor.

Build wise, your pretty much looking at an i53570k, a gtx670, a 128gb SSD, an aftermarket cooler, 8gb low profile RAM, optical drive, a Z77 mobo, HDD, a case, OS and peripherals.

Passey's spec is pretty good, obviously keyboards, mice and cases are a lot of personal preference so have a look around there.

Best of luck, and feel free to ask questions :)

I think I'll do a bit of fiddling with the keyboard and mouse but what about the graphics cards, there's a clear difference in price between ATI and GeForce. Is the price reflected in the performance or am I just paying more because my budget allows it?

there is a difference between AMD and nvidia the 670 is about the same as the 7970 which are in the same price bracket.

680 is alightly better than a 670 but not worth the extra.

Google will find you lots on benchies
