An important decision to make....

I am due to graduate in June of this year, and as most people have (or should ;)) be doing, I've been applying like mad to various companies that interest me. I recently interviewed for a company in London, and have been offered a job starting in September. It is a fantastic position in a reputable company, with an excellent starting salary. Also, given the competitive nature of the IT industry, I know I've been lucky to have secured such an opportunity. I really believe I would enjoy working there, and the impressions I got from my visits there have been high :).

However, like the majority of people, it's been my dream to travel when I graduate, and as the starting date for this position is September (non-negotiable), this is at conflict with my plans.

So I guess the question I'm asking is this. Do you think I should accept the job at the expense of travelling and then live to possibly regret it in the future, or should I pass up on the opportunity and go travelling. I think I'm going to have quite an important decision to make in the near future, and I'm looking for any opinions or stories of people who have been faced with the same predicament.

Hmmm  :)

I'd go for the job personally, decent jobs with good opportunities are pretty scarce, OTOH if it all goes wrong you can bin it and go travelling next year.

I'm sure that you're aware of the pros and cons of either - and that's the sucky part.

Prioritising is always a drag.

If it were me back then, I would have taken the job.

If it were me now, I would go on holiday.

Dont you have a couple of months between graduating and september? can you not do a little travelling then?

Another thing to think about is that if this job really is a good one then it wont be there in a year or two, yet the world (hopefully) still will be. You can get the experience from your job (as they say thats what counts) then in a couple of years when you have more experience and more money you can travel then, this will mean you will be coming back to better job prospects as well as having travelled.

More and more people are taking gap years when they are older so it might be something to think about.

There is also the argument that you will get itchy feet at the company because you want to travel so will stay there unsettled for a time before travelling anyway. But you know yourself better than anyone on these forums.

Yes, around 3 months. Though a daft date for the graduation ceremony sort of cuts that time in half :\. Could skip it I suppose...

Yeah that's the problem I'm stuck with. At this point in my life (aged 20), I know I've been very lucky to be offered this job, and it would be rather foolish to pass it up. However, I'll probably end up thinking like you when I'm older and live to regret it. Oh well, not exactly a bad problem to have, at least I've got something lined up! :)

That's true, I am just scared of hitting 30 and having regrets about all the things I wanted to do in my life. All it will need is some damn woman to come along, and the whole plan will go **** up ;)!

go away as soon as possible - get back in time for job
That's what I'm leaning towards. Just rang my Mum, and she seems to think that's the best course of action as well. Then again, she was probably the one who came along 25 years ago and ruined my Dad's ambitions to galavant around the world ;)!

I would suggest travel around europe for the summer, and plan bigger things after that while you have the money to do so.

Personally, if you are okay financially, have no responsibilities and travelling is something you really want to do, then go. You may never get another chance to do it, well not with the holidays you get in a full-time job anyway.

Yes, a good job is important, but so is living :)

i would suggest a couple of years of work and then take a sabbatical wither between this and another job or in the job.

the main thing is to start working, getting that experience and earning the money, after that you can think of doing some travelling.

it also mean you can really plan a trip, and go to places you may not be able to, especaially is your salary is a good one..

same as most other people really say really, take the job whatever.

If you have a few months, do some travelling (Europe?) in the summer and get back for September. You do the job for a couple of years and save up for a world travel rather than get into debt now as well.

Enjoy! :D

Take the job, Stick with it till you got experiance. 2 years. Then go traveling. Can them come back and should get a job easily.. Also you'll be able to save up loads.
