An important question of our times....

pizza express is barely better than TGI fridays tbh... (food quality is far superior, but not the overall 'omg r0x0rness' ... certainly not OMG enough to justify the requirement of knife n fork....

Being seriously just do whatever you feel comfortable with, it can depend on the situ tbh. As gilly said, if your in pizza hut having wine etc. cutlery might be best, however if your having a few beers with the lads, hands are allowed :)

Pizza express have blue neon lights on the sign and give the pizzas poncy italian names, so people assume they should use a knife and fork :D

They're not even nice either, they taste lke ****

surely to god people can taste the diff between P hut and P express

P hut the topping are loaded on typical yank style

P express light topping typical Italian style

You pays your money you take our choice but to say there is no difference is utter ********

When I was in Italy a few years back, the locals cut the Pizza with the Aformentioned cutlery and then ate with hands. So I guess when in Rome and all that

knife and fork.. more classy

how on earth is eating in a pizza place classy, using a knife and fork makes you look like you are trying to be posh, but just look stupid :P

Pizza Express is far superior to Pizza Hut. You don't get screaming kids etc in Pizza Express for a start, and you get proper pizza on a nice base with some classic toppings. :)

If you prefer Pizza Hut (or Domino's) you're a cretin.

Its all about your local one off italian restaurant, especially when they know what your usual is :D

This is a superb thread, how can two differently shaped metal tools and some bread with flavouring cause so much debate? :D Hands ***, unless it's REALLY posh.

EDIT: It appears I can't abbreviate "for the win"?

I went to the pizza express outside the lowry in manchester a while ago, and it's the best pizza I've had in this country.. doesn't touch the italian stuff though.

I can't remember if I used cutlery, but I don't think I did. Pizza is finger food.

Its because this is a posh place, like Pizza Express ;)

Nobody is saying it's The Fat Duck, it's just a different level to Pizza Hut, that's all.

Proper restaurant = Knife and Fork. Everywhere else hands!

Eating with a knife and fork in pizza hut is like eating a burger in McDonalds with a knife and fork imo

I think it depends on the restaurant.

One thing I do know is, on the way home after the pub, eights pints of Jouster or Stella on board, I would recommend a knife and fork for that house special pizza from the kebab shop. :p

The pizza at Pizza Express doesn't slide off the slice of pizza when you try and eat it (like at Pizza Hut).

Presume you mean the topping :p And absolutely right. Is that the sign of a good pizza?

I was told by an authentic, greasy, over familiar, self possessed italian who runs our local restaurant that pizza was a simple peasant food that was eaten with the hands. The idea of the crust is rather like the crimping on a cornish pastie, in that because the diners hands may be dirty, the main past of the pizza / pastie was eaten and the crust / crimping left behind.

I would like to point out that personally I wouldn't dream of leaving either the crust from a pizza or the crimping from a pastie.

I would also like to point out that the italian in question is actually a good friend and his restaurant makes genuine authentic style pizzas, baked in a wood burning oven that are to die for. He also is genuinely greasy, over familiar and self possessed, but I guess that makes him authentic too.
