2 friends (who don't even play wow) was having the argument. I do play wow and answered this way:

"technically, you can "complete" it in terms of the content they have given to you, because each expansion is basically thought of as a movie, therefore you complete that, but the entire game is not yet finished (as in Blizzard have not told us that this is the storyline finished)".

What you guys think?

You can complete it in it's current form. Just because there will be updates doesn't mean you can't complete it. The whole point of updates is to give people who have completed it more content. Which they can then go and complete.

If Blizzard want to keep making money, I can't see the storyline ever finishing ;)

Like any other game it has a set amount of content, once it's done you've completed it. But there's so much content its unlikely to happen and Blizzard are forever adding more. You are more likely to complete it in terms of your own goals.

exactly. i have finsihed halo 1, 2 and 3. just because there will be halo 4 doesn't mean i now haven't completed the previous ones.

I would say that it depends on your perspective and what you want out of the game. If you're playing it for fun, to be in a good guild, make some friends and have a good time, then not really, since its an ongoing experience. If you're sole aim is to get to Lv80 and complete all the quests, then yeah.

Completing WoW? Do every single quest on every single class/character combo possible, doing every profession, reaching exalted with every faction, and getting every single achievement on each of them.

Not in anyone's lifetime to be honest :p I would say that getting 'The Seeker' and 'Loremaster' titles as well as being at the forefront of raiding are fair indicators that you've pretty much done a massive portion of the game - for the time being. The game technically never ends - there's no 'game over', no ending credits rolling. Whatever you do, whoever you kill, you're still going to be playing the game. Killed Arthas in Lich King? Great, hop on back to Dalaran and do something else.

I think by it's very nature a MMORPG can't ever really be completed.

Sure you can finish all dungeons and get every bit of gear you want. After that technically the game in it's current form is "complete" but it wont be long before a content patch is out giving you more to do.

I've been playing WoW since it started and I can't honestly say I've reached a point where I felt I've done everything the game has to offer. I came close by having 6 Epic geared lvl70s, but then the Sunwell Patch hit closely followed by the expansion, both giving me lots to do.

I'd say no. You can achieve everything only for something to change. By the definition complete everything would have to be accomplished so that's several characters done over and over again whilst not missing a quest.

I don't class a game as completed until the end credits roll!

There's only one way to beat the game ... and that is to not play it ;)

Back when I was in a raiding guild in Everquest I always used to say I'd completed an expansion pack after the first time we killed the hardest boss.

Depends what you term as 'complete'. Some people only see a game as complete when they've got every little secret and explored every area, some see it as simply finishing the main quest line and leveling to the maximum level.

With WoW you can complete the quests and get to 80, you could see that as complete.. but then you can get into the trading side of things and get the best items possible for your class/character.

That's why online RPGs are so popular and people get so addicted, because you can constantly develop your character and you never really 100% complete the game.

Now with a game like Tomb Raider you could get to the end, kill the boss and call it complete... but some people like to then go back and find every artifact and secret and unlock all areas of the game.
