An odd waking up experience

Any way to provoke these sort of things? The only weird thing i've had when waking up was when I slept on my arm and it was totally dead :p I was looking at it like wtf is this and slapping it, then it went all warm and slowly came alive :p
I busted my nose like this. Woke up, had an itchy nose, went to scratch, had a dead arm... didn't realise... smacked myself in the face and nearly broke my nose :D :(

I did that! I was having a dream in which I was reaching out to touch a dead body and then I woke up and touched my hand. I nearly leapt through the roof, I thought it was a dead body until I realised it was just my hand which had gone numb!

Is it just blood not being able to circulate? And if so then why didn't my arm die since I was laid on it for like 10 hours, wouldn't the cells die?

I slept weirdly once leaning on me leg, woke up totally dead leg not noticing, fell to the floor... you get the idea, it felt so weird having no feeling though, scary.

This happened to me a while ago. One morning i pulled myself out of bed and dropped down to the floor (I had a bunk bed at the time) only to find my legs were completely numb so i fell flat on my face :p

Ive experienced it many many times, happens more when your stressed and sleep out of normal hours i think.

Its very strange for me, feels like someone is inside my head!! Very surreal experience after about the 5th time you learn to enjoy it, its very weird.

A couple of days ago i remember waking up (per say) and i couldn't open my eyes or move. It seemed as though my mind was awake but my body was not, i would try to move my arms and could barely do so. This only lasted around 10 seconds, and reflecting back it was a rather scary experience, a bit like being paralysed i presume. This has happened before, though rarely.

I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

Yup sleep paralysis (SP) I have had this several times, think yourself lucky, you could only not move. When it happens to me I have freeky experiences, like my bed will shake and I will hear a wolf growling but be unable to move, or I will see things around me, hear voices etc... now thats freeky!

i get this sort of thing all the time. when i was at school especially, but it's decreased to just the days i work now, i mean i know i should get out of bed, and my brain is thinking "mmmm...money" but my body is saying "**** off i'm tired".

but seriously, it's a common occurance for me (and unfortunatly so is sleeping on my arm...can take 20 minutes to stop being numb sometimes :p) it can be quite fun :D

Not the same thing, if you had what the OP does you would not be able to move, shout or anything.... I have however woke up after sleeping on my arm, and thinking oh **** I cant feel my arm.... took about 5 mins before it was back to normal to!

Haha yeah simlar thing happened with me, didnt fall on my face, but legs just didnt work and fell.

I tend to move a lot in my sleep, wake up in all sorts of positions, wake myself up a lot by hitting my head and hands off stuff! Kinda annoying!

There are a couple of ways I wake myself up

1) My leg twitches violently and I just snap out of sleep

2) Which happend to me last night, I wake myself up making high pitched wahling (sp) Happend last night in a dream about little sisters trying to kill me.... (From Bioshock) but I was not even scared when I woke up!

3) I wake myself up from in the dream, by making myself realise it cant be real

I also sometimes feel like im falling back into my body with a snap when Iwake up... anyone else get this?

If your body paralyses itself when you sleep how come a lot of people have the tendancy to move around or kick about in their sleep?
There are different stages of sleep. You're paralysed during the stage in which intense dreams are common, or else you would move in accordance with the dream and might injure yourself. You move around in different stages of sleep. During a full night's sleep, you pass through each stage several times.

Sleep paralysis occurs when you wake up extremely quickly while in the paralysed stage of sleep. It's done chemically, so with a very rapid waking up you can become conscious before the effect can be countered.

A common cause for fear is that you can't breathe. That's only because you are trying to consciously breathe. The muscles that control automatic breathing are not paralysed. You won't suffocate to death, just as you don't suffocate to death every time you sleep.
