An upgrade to a stock 5770

Just wondering what card you guys would recommend for £150 that would give me a decent performance upgrade to my current HIS 5770.
I wanna stick with ATI unless there is a huge performance gain for the same price on NVidia (without stupid power consump!) and I'm not bothered about OCing the card unless that too will gain me a reasonable increase as I don't really know how best to tweak it even using the Catalyst Control Center.

I'm also interested in the fully plastic covered ATI cards coz I think they look stunning... extra long with the small fan right on the end :P

Current card: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-122-HT&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1515

Lemme know what you think. Or... if it's even worth the upgrade.

5850 if you want to stick with amd/ati its like 137£ should give you nice boost.

forget about stock cooler twin frozr is much better

i would not spend 180 £ on 5870 now as 480gtx is only 20 more and same goes with 6950 around 200 £ can be unlocked to 6970

I'd really go for the pre-order deal on the GTX470 in this situation, it does offer a decent performance leap over the similarly price AMD cards. Power consumption... It could be worse.

As others have said, go with the HD5850 if you're sticking with AMD. :)
Might not have the nice looking cooler, but it has the one that works well.
Would be nice if the HD6850 was at the £150 price point.

Would the 6850 be worth it? I like the idea of that 5850 even if the cooler does look ****, i've heard a lot about that one.

My budget wont go over 150 unfortunately otherwise i'd get a 6950 and flash it. Is the 6850 flashable to 6870 by any chance? :D

And out of 6850 and twin frozr 5850 which would be better overall...
I'm not overly knowledgable about GPU's right now!

What's the deal with B Grade stuff? Seems to have 2 years warranty still so what are the catches?

Also, on numbers, my 5770 is quicker on core by 125 MHz... does that mean anything ? 5850 has more processing cores so I assume that's where the speed will come from and I've also just read a review saying that the 5850 can't OC very well, which I'm now kinda tempted to try with this card as apparently the MSI afterburner is better than CCC for OCing a GPU?

The 5850 will OC nicely enough, ignore the core speed differences, shaders are what you want. :)

Can't remember the exact B grade conditions, think it can only be exchanged at OcUK within 3 months of purchase. Rest of warranty is with the manufacturer... (Someone else can hopefully post the exact terms again)
I've bought B Grade stuff before, it's usually just come in blank cardboard boxes and been missing driver CDs/cables.
My motherboard has been going strong for nearly 2 and a half years now, it came from the B grade section.

Hmm nice, that may well save a bit of dollar then... May give them a ring when I get home tbh and find out. I did take a look at the GTX470 for £144 but I'm still dubious towards NVidia as I've ALWAYS been an ATIfreak. Would it REALLY be that much better than the 5850? Baring in mind if I got the B grade it would be £30 more expensive for the 470.

(Thanks for all the info btw. Appreciate it. =))

I am in similar situation as OP so will keep an aye on this thread.

as some advised ,I was thinking about 460..but power consumption putted me off ...
and as OP I am ATI fan as well;)

And I was thinking about 5850, but as I plan to get 30" (2500x1600) and play games on that res as well, I think 5850 would not be enough ? or my option would be 6850 or 6950 only ?

Again, I dont want to hijack this thread ;)

Running at that resolution, a 6850 just wouldn't cut it.
If you are wanting to get an AMD card, then I'd be going for one of the 2gb 6950/6970s.

so 2GB 6950 would do at 2500x1600 ?

but for the time being I really think that 5850 would be huge improvement to mine 5770 at 1900x1200 ( my res) ??

5770 does handle 1900x1200 with mine cpu quite good anyway but I havent tried latest games that require huge power... mafia 2 runs smoothly

is it worth it to go for 5850 ? or shall I wait for new 25nm cards to show ?
