That would imply that the comma's only use was as parenthesis, it isn't.

I stand by my comments. The second sentence looks better to me.

A semi-colon should be used there. Dirtydog wins the duel.

Isn't it all down to oxford english or non-oxford english? or something. Oxford english is all about the semi-colons, and non-oxford english which is largely regarded to be proper english is about the commas. I always thought.

I've no idea what "oxford english" is; I assume you're talking about recieved pronunciation or the "Queen's English". And no, semi-colons are not limited to use in R.P.

Yeah I wish I could remember the whole of the conversation.. it's not to do with the queen's english or the oxford english dictionary, but the way that oxford university teaches english. Because it's such an institution their method has been adopted by others and it isn't truly correct or something, although isn't truly wrong either.

I could well've got which is which the wrong around. To me though having a semi colon after "i've no idea what 'oxford english" is' is unnecessary.

A semi-colon is used to string together two seperate clauses. If you use a comma you're making a big nono (unless the second clause begins with a conjunctive.)

According to my English Lit uni housemate commers should usually always come in pairs

Though you've been told that, it just isn't true. Although commas sometimes come in pairs, it's not a requirement. :)

Meh lol, in my defence though I don't do it that way anyway. :p

And to sum up the thread:

no one has a ****** clue! :D
