I know the answer.
It's the ultimate test of a drivers buying decision process, i.e.
"are you more interested in performance than the looks of the car"

or should that read

"you'll never know whether the pedestrian vomitted because of the looks of your car, or because of how fast you drove past him".
 
I would imagine it was built for some odd communist asian country.

"If communists made Subarus, they'd probably look like this!"

The japanese went through a thing of wanting cars that looked like old british classics, and this was Subaru's idea apparently. Quite a few years ago.
