Well it seems that 2.2 is finally officially out for the Nexus One.
Shouldn't be too long before we can see it on the Desire probably.

Google has officially released Android 2.2 Froyo for the Nexus One, with OTA updates beginning this week. The new firmware brings with it WiFi tethering support together with a significant speed boost for the Snapdragon-based smartphone.

Google also states that the 2.2 floating around was not the final build.

Android 2.2 official is only out when HTC release it, probably July. However, a completely fresh build (not a port) is already out if you're rooted.

I've used the Modaco kitchen sink FRF85 build for my Desire, not going back to any HTC specific build anymore, you can remove all the garbage from the build with the Modaco builds like footprints and come out with a nice lighter weight rom.

It's been a life saver today, we've moved office and have no internet yet, I'm currently downloading Eclipse IDE with tethering at 400kb/s and browsing ocuk at the same time :)

Thanks for the heads up.

I updated manually just as a matter of course (from the leaked 2.2), can't hurt to have the latest build! :) .

Er no, they've already confirmed rollout starting Q3 this year so that's soon (July onwards).

HTC will probably take ages to update the Desire to 2.2. In the mean time CyanogenMod6 will be available for the Desire fairly soon.

I really don't know where this idea has come from.
HTC have always said that their roll-out of 2.2 wouldn't be long after it's official release.

Just because some people have been stung by HTC in the past doesn't mean history will repeat itself.

I must admit I hadn't seen the recent announcement, only emails from their customer services which ranged from "it's coming but we don't know when" to "we're investigating the feasibility". Unfortunately I'll have to wait for Orange to update their version of the firmware before I get an ota update.
