So tomorrow is potentially android 2.2 day - hopefully we will get some nice new features liable to make it to phones everyone in o, about 2 years. Anyway, ive been thinking ( and blogged ) about what features i think the community and OS need in order to be competitive with our Apple 'friends'

What do you guys think, any features you would like to see released tomorrow ?

Thats half of the problem with Android the OS fragmentation. While 2.2 will be full of shiney things I'm willing to bet money that only the N1 and other dev handsets will get it initially - together with new releases from HTC etc. The iPhone environment is just nice in the way that they all share a common OS - until 4.0 that is, where the 2g and 3G (in part) are excluded.

My understanding is that the Android plan is to remove all these fancy features from the OS and recreate them as apps that can be installed on multiple OS versions. Then, new features could be coded by the Android team and released as apps that would work on the existing firmware without waiting for manufacturers to customise each new release.

As a Hero owner I think this will be the most important feature for the good of Android, though I might never see it on the Hero.

For it to keep working as good as it does.

New updates are a good thing.

My old Nokia I had when I was a kid never got updates and I never complained. So I will be happy with any new shiny bits :)

I'd like them to put voice dialling in as default.
I mean, sheesh what phone/os doesn't have that nowadays?
I've heard there are apps for it, but c'monnnnnn, build it in for gods sake!

I think like many people some sort of Apps2SD implementation would be top of my list.

This should hopefully lead to a better quality of apps/games being developed as they're not restricted limited space.

I don't see it in Froyo (maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised) but some sort of separation of the core/apps so users can get updates independent of the device and manufacturer would be good, if not essential for the OS to continue to grow.

Yep, it makes perfect sense. Why wait for the next release to fix a bug in the native email app

I seem to remember reading something where google had said they were almost finished developing Android to a point where it's where they want it (in terms of features and stability) and that G (Gingerbread) would be where they see it being at that stage.

I wish Vodafone would bother to update my magic with 2.1, let alone 2.2
TBH, with the advent of the new HTC Wildfire, I think HTC are probably regretting their commitment to providing a 2.1 update for the Hero, let alone the Magic, as I'm sure they'd much rather keep it for the newer handsets like the Wildfire.

Fix the market searches, how can a company with one of the best search algorithms have an awful market search.

I don't get how they allowed it to be so bad, it would be bad for anyone else, but for Google its embarrassing! Its like a sign writer having a wonky signs on their vans!
