Hi, going to Spain soon, and don't fancy buying a bolt on data deal or paying 40 odd pence per mb, as i can limit my internet ise to when on wifi.

Am i right in thinking i can just disable mobile data in settings to stop apps trying to access the net? And this would still allow incomming calls or text?

If your on 3 you don't need a 'Bolt On' and you won't pay any extra in Europe and much of the rest of the world!

I'm off to America next month and asked on their Twitter support feed, and they said it uses your UK tariff for Phone/Text/Data so long as you don't phone/text anyone within the country you are in (if you phone/text the UK it's just like being in the UK!) where as Data is the same as being in the UK...

So my 250mins/Ultd Text/All-you-can-eat data will still cost me £12.90/month no extras :)

Otherwise just turn off 'Allow Data while Roaming' :)

Spain wasn't included though last time i checked, maybe they couldn't stike a deal with local providers

3 also do the Euro Internet Pass....£5/day IIRC, which gives unlimited data for the day

Yeh that's not a price I'm prepared to pay, basically I can use my relatives wifi when I need to, send/receive possible urgent/emergency calls/texts (don't care about the cost for that as there will be none, or maybe one or two as I have access to landlines etc).

Basically I just need to stop the phone using data/internet on the sly and running a bill up, like a bunch of apps deciding they need to update or something (but I don't want to mess about configuring app permissions individually, only to have to reconfigure it all on return).

Interestingly I flew to Holland this week and was never told to turn my phone off; just to flight mode... even during takeoff?!

KLM? the Dutch seem to be quite savvy when it comes to that sort of thing.

Try telling a plane load of brits bound for Benidorm on Ryanair to switch their phones to flight mode, it's easier just to tell them to turn it off, covers all bases and saves the flight staff having to do tech support for mobile phones :D
