Hi all, having a debate with my apple fan boy friend!

I know back in the day developers made stuff for iOS then ported, is that mainly still the case?

He is saying apps are optimised more for iOS etc. that old argument!

I still come across it now and then, but it's not as bad as it used to be. Most developers are following the Android design guidelines :)

Just the other day I took a look at my old university's student union app

Awful.

I think major developers still favour getting their apps on iOS before Android. The App Store has been a key selling point for iOS although they do appear to be scared of Android with their now advertised "Only on the App Store" apps.
As said before it's a lot better now. Back on Froyo the Google Market IMO was **** in comparison. Personally though I think iOS still has the edge with their apps looking slightly more polished.

I think the gap is really small now, there are some iOS exclusive apps, but there are some Android exclusives too. Most big companies will release and update Android/iOS at the same time now, things like snapchat releasing their big new update wouldn't have happened on Android along with iOS a few years ago.

Also a lot of big companies I have spoken too don't enjoy being on the App store, they lose 30% and to a big business thats millions your giving to Apple, but iOS is lucrative. The feeling I get is as soon as iOS doesn't make enough money there looking to drop it, most are praying for more money in Android.

IOS still has its fair share of better looking/designed apps tbh - especially on the tablet front - it is the one reason why I keep my iPad in heavy use still. It is still easier from a developers point of view imo to release an app on iOS as you're essentially catering for a small set of devices.

As for porting, I wouldn't know but I was recently surprised with the Android version of the new Dropbox email app (Mailbox) using icons right out of iOS.

On average I think there's a notable difference (with iOS apps being better looking, out sooner, and more fluid in operation). A lot of Android apps don't seem as smooth or well made.

Having said that, some are equal on both platforms, Flipboard for example.

There are definitely more, higher quality apps for iOS in my experience too (not just games).

TBH I have always found Google to be sloppy with the lack of eye candy of their Apps. Actually Android as a whole this has been the case. Currently though the changes Google have made since 4.4, and their new launcher, have done wonders and actually made the OS look a hell of a lot better.

Developers will always go where the money is and that's still iOS at the moment. Fewer users but a greater willingness by those users to spend money.
