Android crew, are you using waze or Google maps for navigation?

Just opened the waze app on my android phone after a long time and it seems to have a lot of helpful features, more than Google maps. In particular for my young lad whose a new driver, it comes with stuff like avoiding difficult junctions, speed warming etc, so just wanted to check who else uses waze over Google maps?

Not sure the question is really specific to Android users.

I've gone back to Google Maps as i just prefer the simplicity of it. Waze doesn't really offer me anything more unless I want a "spirited" drive (cameras). I have both installed.

Devils Advocate: He needs to get used to real driving, shirley?

I used Waze most of the time, just prefer the interface. Don't care so much for the alerts.

The option to find parking at destination is worth making the switch.

I've started using google maps over my VW's inbuilt sat nav, which is now well out of date. I might play around with Waze again but tbh google seems to do everything I want it to do.
It does throw a wobbly occasionally though, like routing me to Dublin airport rather than the ferry port a few weeks ago!

I use Google, have tried Waze a few times but I'm not really sure what it offers over Google apart form cartoons showing me where other Waze users are. I gather that it used to be that it would show things like mobile speed camera locations, but I'm pretty sure that appears on Google maps now as well?

This is generally where I have ended up as well. Only used Waze a handful of times and always gone back to Google Maps. My understanding is that the 'report congestion / speed camera / etc' in Google Maps shows in Waze and vice versa (since Google bought Waze anyway!)

I use Copilot because I bought it a long time ago when it was a perpetual licence. But for times when Copilot doesn't cut it then I use Google Maps.

I'm curious to try it now that I have an Android Auto head unit, but I just went to open the app on my phone and it wanted me to log in - I could have sworn that it was linked to my Google account already, but I guess not. Meh.

I've got a Copilot account too. I don't have the app installed at the moment, as I don't really think it does anything better than Google maps (or not that I remember), apart from having offline maps. So I download it if ever I drive abroad.

Waze, always waze.

I have found many times google just piles me into traffic / jams / congestion. Waze seems to be a lot more pro-active in working out alternate routes and diverting. The general navigation seems better as well.

Google Maps.

What is more important is teaching your kids to follow road signs and not follow the sat nav. You should only really need to follow sat nav for the last few miles.

Nothing beats knowledge in the end though and a sat nav that is more basic in that regard is the best as it teaches you to use your eyes. Our road signage is fantastic really and some of the best in Europe. Use it and it will do you good. I can spot a nav follower from a mile off when on the road coming up to junctions because they are listening and looking at what the Nav is saying rather than looking up and left at the signs telling them which lane to be in for where the road is going.

As for traffic Garmin is by far the best I have used although that isn't free as you need to buy a device.

Agree and disagree, todays navigation has the ability to re-route you if there has been an incident ahead etc. Which can, and has saved me hours before.

I agree with that. Live traffic is a god send but even still it should only be a guide.

The amount of times it gives you a massive traffic warning yet when you get there it can be completely clear or the new route you go on ends up in massive queues because everyone else is doing the same.

For example I can be going to Hemel from Peterborough in the morning and 99% of the time the M1 is fubar in the morning and it can be quicker going along the A1 coming off at Hatfield and going across the A414 to Hemel but at the same time the traffic can easily come on thick and you end up getting there in exactly the same time that staying on the M1 route would have just been easier and more relaxing.

Although the other day I was coming back to base and I have a notification of an hour delay on the A17 I know something is seriously wrong and go back through Grantham on the A52 instead.

Google maps for me. It's not perfect though.
For instance it shows heavy traffic on the M60 everyday for me, but I know it's mostly the m62 slip road causing the traffic so actually no traffic. I wish it knew which lanes the traffic was in.

I like using Waze, however I find that Google Maps is quicker to update showing traffic jams and road closures. There was a recent road closure round my way. Google took 2 days to update, Waze took 5. By that time the road was only closed for another day or two.

I like waze because of the interface and warnings it gives about roadworks, speed cameras, potholes etc.

Is that a still a thing . I remember this used to cost a lot and so much messing around was needed with getting maps etc. Surely Google maps and waze are free and more convenient?
