Android - mute certain apps

I want to be able to mute certain apps (such as WhatsApp) but allow calls to come through at night. Anything out there out that can do this easily (not something like Tasker)?

Sure, you want to change the notification sound to zero and leave the ringer sound to normal. Llama will do this, Android has a built in system too on 5.0+ and lightflow will probably do it too (along with LED control).

If it's just for night then can't you set up Do Not Disturb mode?

What phone are you using? Lollipop and above has a priority interruptions only mode which sets only priority notifications to ring/vibrate the phone. To access the sound profile press the volume rocker and select the "Priority Interruptions only", which should pop up a star icon on the notification area. You can also fiddle with the settings via Settings -> Sound & Notification -> Interruptions.
