Hi there.

I haven't bought a phone in quite some time and not up-to-date on current specs.

My wife is after a new one budget of £200.00, tops.

Any advice on what to consider, would be much appreciated.

Happy to consider any brand - I, personally, still have an old Xiaomi that is still happily ticking along.

Only real requirement is nothing with a really terrible camera (though most phones, these days, I would imagine are pretty good).

Thanks in advance.

A fair few offerings from Motorola at this price point, and Nokia have a few too. They run mostly stock Android offerings, which I personally would prefer over skinned versions. I think the camera quality is going to be largely the same across the board at this budget.

Thanks guys.

That Nokia looks like a really good deal, actually.

The other options, I am currently look at, were the

Xiaomi Redmi Note 12

and the various Motorola models - there are load of them, all getting pretty good reviews, for under £200.00.

Having done some more research, I would also add that internal storage of 128GB would be more of a requirement, rather than 5G. However, that Nokia does seem to have almost everything my wife could want.

Am just looking at the Motorola G73, which you can get for £230.00 at the moment. A bit over budget but you get a huge increase in everything, from what I can tell.

Thanks for that - see what you mean. Have read quite a lot on how that G73 is not quite the deal it first appears to be.

My other half seems to be favouring the Xiaomi Redmit Note 12, based upon her own research.

Does seem to be a really good phone (and I own a Xiaomi myself) but I am definitely going to push the Nokia on the grounds that they are stock Android.

We'd looked at the G82 as well. On paper, specs look great for the price. Then you read the issues;
  • Dropped Calls
  • Slow/Disconnecting WiFi when Bluetooth is enabled
  • Battery drain and heat issues
  • Lack of bi-monthly updates
Where as the Nokia gets updated monthly, longer support and better warranty, Snapdragon CPU (Granted its early days, but still)

Both the folks seem to like them, said how much quicker it was than the previous, big screen etc.

I went off Motorola due to lack of support and bugs. Used to be a big fan. I avoid them these days. They are tempting though.

I much prefer like stock android. Have a couple of Nokia G50s in the family and they've been great. Only negatives is the size (too big), low res screen and the Snapdragon 480 is too slow. A faster CPU and better screen of the higher models would be perfect. If you want better than that get a pixel A model.

Used to own a Motorola android phone, but now also advise to avoid.
Software upgrades are lackluster compared to the competition.
On their basic models only giving 1 android version update and 2 years of patches...

Thanks so much for the input - does seem clear that Motorola is not the deal that it used to be and should be avoided.

Annoyingly, I missed out on that deal on the POCO X5 - I was tempted by that myself.

Great point, in particular, about screen size - I am checking whether there is a screen size that is too big.

I was in the same predicament, I have ordered a Motorola MA1 Wireless Android Auto adapter for my car which requires a dual band WiFi phone. My current Motorola G8 Power is 2.4ghz only.

Looked at the Nokia G60 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 and decided on the Nokia G60 because of the promised three OS upgrades. I used the discount code mentioned above and ordered a Nokia clear case for £9.99 as well.

Came to £179.14 but I will have to pay 5% more because I’m in Jersey and I’ll be charged GST on it so £188.10. On Amazon the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 is £174.99 inc GST and you do get a case with it.

I also looked at the 64GB G60 for £161.87 inc GST on Amazon but decided on the 128GB from Nokia themselves. Would’ve come to £170.61 inc GST with the case. So for the sake of £17.49 I’ve gone for the 128GB version which is the same capacity as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12.

Annoyingly Nokia don’t do VAT exempt sales so I’ve had to pay £29.86 to the UK government but the discount code was worth £29.85 so that offset it and made it worthwhile.

I'd stick with Xiaomi. Hard to recommend an exact model as there is so much variation. Depends if you want gaming, camera etc.
I'd take a look through the Notes, Pocos, and whatever is periodically on offer right now and see what matches your needs best. Might need an extra couple ££ to hit the sweet spot but there's usually some discount codes available. I honestly don't think anything else comes close in terms of value for money.
